he decision to apply for this course was easy to make for me indeed. Partly because Spanish-speaking zone is such a culturaly rich and diverse area, and partly because of my aunt being crazy about Latin America, who managed to pass her bug on me. What I found the most fascinating at first, being a little girl, were stories about Eldorado, a misterious lost city. As I grew up, I began to indulge myself in other ‘products’ of Hispanic culture area, such as books by Marquez and Llosa, Che Guevara’s diaries, history of Pisarro’s conquest and even Daniken’s theories concerning the extraterriestral origin of Nazca’s signs. I believe my personal qualities will help me to make the most of this studies if I get accepted. I consider myself as a broad-minded person, respectful for other’s views on life. I like to get socially involved, which give me a sense of fulfilment, and that’s why I volunteered for Amnesty International, hoping that my little actions might help to improve other people’s lives, or even save them. I also attended some conferences organised by AI dealing with urgent questions. The present academic year, however, I’ve been spending working as an au pair in London. It gave me an opportunity to prove my responsibility and test myself in an unknown enviromnment. I also observe my stay in UK made me more sure of myself, confident to speak my mind even if it is completely different from the opinion of others. I enjoy learning languages; I reckon I have a natural ability to pick them up easily. I will be taking IELTS exam in June. Apart from English, I know some German and basic French. Unfortunately I have never had a chance to deal with Spanish.

I realise not all of them are impressive; but that is because education level in high school that I attended was challenging. I could have had much better grades in another school and not being a hard-working student, I am sure. My class had a ‘language and European Union ‘ profile. When it comes to my other achievements, I participated in quite a number of competitions, like English language and theme essay writing ones, and have been involved in editing our school magazine, maintaining its good quality level. I took advantage of the chance to go to Germany, on a student exchange to Fulda. The main aspects that I would like to explore are Latin American culture in its all aspects, changes in these multinational societies and the complexity of political situation. And obviously to achieve a good Spanish level, so that I could communicate with native speakers without any difficulties. When it comes to my other interests, I am really fond of art and enjoy sightseeing and visiting art galleries. I do not do much sport to tell the thruth…but I really enjoy my ballet classes. I am keen on travelling, although the only place I’ve been outside Europe is Egypt. But I am hoping to visit India this summer. For my future plans, I consider engaging for a non-governmental agency like Amnesty, and improving people’s lives; becoming a travel books writer or working in tourism section, dealing with Spanish-speaking countries. I strongly believe it is essential to know what we are aiming at in our lives.

My passion for French has certainly flourished throughout my education, a language and culture that have, without doubt had an enormous impact upon how we, as British citizens, live and communicate today. Language skills equip us with the ability to communicate, to read and to understand both our own and other cultures. This is of course essential for any sort of international communication whatsoever; relying on interpreters isn’t always reliable as much of the intended meaning can often be lost in translation. I have always believed that this is a waste and have strived for fluency in order to prevent such waste on my part. A degree in the French language would enable me to achieve this goal as it is a longstanding aspiration of mine to immerse my self in and become part of French culture. A recent exchange to Rouen allowed me the chance to apply my classroom knowledge to everyday surroundings. I managed to do so quite successfully and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. This, among other experiences, has led me to believe that time spent studying in France would undoubtedly improve my capabilities in the best way possible. I believe that my interest in other languages and culture is also of benefit when studying history. I have a great desire to learn about the past, the events within it that make the world what it is today and current events continue it’s evolution. This interest is deeply rooted, from childhood I was fascinated by tales such as When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, and later on Suite Francaise. This curiosity has led me to become absorbed by topics such as the system of Apartheid in South Africa, the making of modern Russia and the Nazi state. All of which highlight the varying impacts of war, racism and global politics and their relevance throughout the past and certainly throughout the future. The world is continually evolving in terms of politics, economy, environment and I am finding that my historical knowledge enables me to recognise and understand when history really is repeating itself. My passion for language is not merely for the sake of communication, but often for the beauty of words themselves. The study of English literature, and my own extensive reading, has allowed me to appreciate this beauty. The way words can be woven around a reader, captivating them, that they can transport a person to another world. Hundreds of lives, realistically impossible, can be lead through books, multiplying your own life thousands of times. The insight they offer to other people’s imaginations and their sense of humour is what appeals to me the most and it was Roald Dahl that taught me that. Participation in several college excursions has allowed me to gain an insight into many things, from the works of Van Gogh to the West End. Several trips to London have enabled me to learn of much of the city, and of the history of the entire country. The Louvre in France offering similar tastes of colourful and often bloody French history, and also of modern day experiences. This has simply served to give me a taste of the culture I so desperately crave. For the last two years I have spent a week in Romania, working alongside a charity, aiming to get gypsy children into education. Whilst I was there I managed to learn a lot about the people, the country, their religions and their language. All of this absorbed me completely and I plan to go back in the future, if only to see that only one more child has gone to school. These children cry out for an education, making me appreciate mine all the more. It is this that makes me work hard in order to achieve my goals, it also makes me want the best I can get for myself as I have the opportunity to do this, I refuse to waste it.

Before I participated in a French Exchange to Montelimar in 2005, I had found French interesting but didn’t particularly think that it would be important in my longer term career aims. However, whilst in Montelimar, I found myself fully immersed in French culture and began to realise the breadth and beauty of the language and the importance of being able to express myself effectively in another language. This led me to exploring other European Languages to add to my knowledge. My sixth form college offered GCSE Italian and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to learn another language. I love the country and have visited there many times with my family.To further my knowledge and understanding of the language and culture, I jumped at the chance to gain work experience in the French Speaking area of Liege, Belgium. I found this an enjoyable and rewarding challenge particularly when it came to teaching younger students English as it gave me an insight into how others learn our language as well as helping me with my studies. This helped my decision to continue my language studies at university.
I have particularly enjoyed the immigration aspects of the French A2 course and the environmental section of the GCSE Italian course. I am also studying A2 Geography, which has allowed me to gain knowledge of the world. I would like to experience many different cultures and languages allowing me to improve my language skills. I am looking forward to a trip to China as this will allow me to experience the culture and language of a non-European country. I am studying A2 Maths which means I have to be organised, keep up to date with work and meet deadlines. AS Geology means that my work has become more detailed, as in field sketches which require as much detail as possible.
Outside of college, I participate in the Scunthorpe Co-Op Choir and I have been involved for 9 years now. This shows I am dedicated, committed and reliable for concerts, rehearsals and tours. It has taught me how to work as part of a team and cooperate fully to its success. The choir have also visited Paris, Australia (singing at the torch ceremony at the Olympics) and Wales and entered several prestigious competitions. In preparation for Paris, I taught the choir how to pronounce the words in Dome Epais. I am a young leader for Brownies and this has taught me how to be a leader. I am very committed to this as I have been part of Girl Guiding since I was 5. I like seeing the Brownies enjoying the activities and I am currently training to become an adult leader. I play for the college Netball Team so I work as part of different teams but also individually and I was captain of the rounders team at school so I had to be organised enough to distribute action plans. I was a prefect at school and a student ambassador for college. I have participated in college open days and evenings as a reference point for prospective students and feel I am a reliable student. I also play the clarinet to Grade 3.
As a part-time job, I work at Argos where I feel I am a trustworthy team member yet I can still work under my own initiative to do things before being requested to do so. I enjoy meeting the staff there and I get to meet a wide range of people from all backgrounds which has improved my communication skills. During the summer, I worked at a school where I created systems to organise the uniform orders and SEN files. I also helped as a French Assistant within some of the GCSE French lessons.
These activities have made me a self-motivated person with a wide variety of interests and I am eager to begin my degree course.

This quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes sums up perfectly the reason why I feel so passionate about the languages spoken around the world. I feel that language is essential to the world today for without language there can be no progress. Language provides an insight into all aspects of a countries culture and I find this very interesting. The ability to speak in different languages opens up a whole new set of opportunities and is excellent for ones personal development. It is this enthusiasm that drives me to study Languages at University.
I first developed an interest in foreign languages when I was a little girl in primary six and I began to learn Spanish for the first time. I found it fascinating, as many people find things they do for the first time, but that fascination has never left me it has only increased. Having studied Spanish for almost eight years and completing my Higher Spanish last year I managed to convince my teachers to let me sit French even though I have no previous knowledge of French except a few failed attempts at conversation while on holiday. This is a difficult challenge but it is one that I am excited and willing to tackle. Languages are a key part of me personally not just my education. I listen to music in many different languages mainly Spanish and Italian, I love foreign films and have many friends from all different parts of the world and I love learning about their culture and their lifestyle.
My eagerness to study languages at University is due to the fact that I am very keen to further my knowledge of languages and get the qualifications I need so that I can take my passion and turn it into my career. In taking this step at University it will bring me closer to my goal. While I am very much a family girl, I would not hesitate to seize the opportunity to spend a year abroad and become a part of another culture. It would be an experience that would benefit all aspects of my development both academically and personally.
Being a Prefect at school for the second year and a carer in my home, I consider myself a mature and responsible person. As an active member of St Andrews Hospice, I take part in almost all of the races and events annually although I do not consider myself a particularly sporty person. This year I am a Buddy at school and I find this a very interesting experience for both the first years and myself. We are working together to make them feel more comfortable about their place in the school but the process is working both ways and is developing my confidence about my role in the school. I am currently waiting on a placement for a part time job in a Call Centre. I think that this job will be beneficial for developing my organisation and communication skills and I will gain more confidence and independence. When I am not working or socialising I am reading. Reading along with languages and Greek Mythology are my passions. I am an avid reader and I have recently delved into foreign books such as the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Harry Potter in Spanish. The combination of these interests is yet another step of furthering my language skills, as I am anxious to do.
For a while now I have been interested in working within the Civil Service or European Parliament as an interpreter or translator. Studying at University is the stepping stone that will ensure that I can achieve my dream.

My decision to study Modern Languages at University has been driven by my passion for Language. My mother is fluent in French and began teaching it to me in primary school. To supplement this study of French, at High School I chose to study German. I realised very quickly that it wasn’t the study of French that I had been enjoying, so much as the study of a language other than my own. As I continued to study German at school I became fascinated by the way language forms and develops and grew increasingly interested in taking the subject further.
Following my GCSEs I chose a varied combination of A level subjects. While studying English Literature and Music I developed my ability to analyse and interpret while also nurturing my creativity. I also studied Theatre Studies until AS level: a course almost entirely dependant on my ability to work in a team. I have also, voluntarily, taken up a distance learning A Level in English Language in order to develop my linguistic awareness and enhance my writing skills. I intend to have completed the full A Level by June 2007. I think this shows, not only great dedication to education and learning, but also a thirst for knowledge. I also continued to study German and it was my ongoing enjoyment of the subject that convinced me to look into careers centred on language.
I think it is a shame that, although 1 in 4 people around the world speak English as a second or third Language*, so few English people speak any other language fluently. I am interested in the cultures of other countries and would like to learn and understand ways of life different from my own. Considering this and having researched many careers, I feel, at the moment that I would be best suited to a career in Interpreting. This job would allow me to meet and associate with lots of different people while also allowing me to learn about their cultures and countries.
Visiting Germany, France and Italy in the past has been wonderful and I would love to travel the world in later life. I have visited Germany twice with school. I particularly enjoyed Cologne where we were given the opportunity to interview the natives for research. It was exhilarating to be able to communicate with them in their own language while also proving to me that, even with my limited vocabulary, I was able to make myself understood. I have also been to Venice and Brittany on holiday which allowed me to experience first hand, different foods and cultures. I know that Interpreting can involve a huge amount of travel and would greatly enjoy the opportunity to go to explore the unknown. I am of course aware that this is a very competitive career and have also researched teaching English as a foreign language.
I got a good feel for teaching when I completed a week of work experience in “Fulshaw Primary School”. I spent the week teaching the children things such as basic Maths and English, and was even lucky enough to practice my German on a young German student who had just transferred to the school. I found the whole experience thoroughly enjoyable and learnt many skills for the future: above all the importance of patience and keeping a professional relationship. I have also worked for a year in Wilmslow Library where I have come into contact with many different types of people. Working for a public service also allowed me to develop skills in problem solving and communication and I have become highly computer literate.
My main extra curricular interests lie in Music and Drama. I am trying to further my interest by having singing and piano lessons and am working towards taking my grade 8 singing exam in June 2007. I am, at present, a member of two theatre companies in the area and partake in many Musicals and Variety shows. I am also in the process of organising and directing my own Musical Showcase in aid of Cancer Research, which I am hoping will take place in May 2007. I have become a very confident person able to express myself clearly and concisely and I think these aspects of my personality would be invaluable when studying Modern Languages.

Throughout sixth form I have developed all of my interests both academic and extra-curricular. In school I excel at English Literature and German because I can express myself fully in both subjects, I enjoy English as there are many interpretations to one piece of work and I like to hear other people’s opinions and then develop my ideas further. I am a very lively, enthusiastic and open-minded person.
In English I have studied many areas and particularly enjoyed contemporary women’s poetry and 17th Century drama. In women’s poetry I studied Atwood’s ‘Manet’s Olympia’ and Duffy’s ‘Standing Female Nude’ when I attended the Sutton Trust Summer School. I was attracted to these poems as I think that although they are similar in subject matter and theme, they are dealt with from two very different perspectives. For my English course I am currently reading Orwell’s 1984 and Huxley’s Brave New World. I am enjoying these novels as they are both about future dystopian societies. At home I am currently reading Mark Haddon’s The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time, which I find interesting due to the unusual narrative style.
In German I like the idea of being able to communicate with people from different cultures and backgrounds and then learning about the historical, political and literary differences. Last February I completed a two week work experience in Germany for Galeria Kaufhof working as a clothing assistant, this could have been a very daunting experience however it proved that I was able to work aboard and communicate with ease in a different language. Next summer I hope to visit Germany or Spain and get a job for 10 weeks to build up my fluency.
Within school I am a member of a student based organisation scheme called Childline Help In Partnership with Schools or also known as CHIPS. As a member of CHIPS I assist with a GCSE German class and help them with topics that they do not understand. This has benefited me greatly as I now have a deeper understanding of German as I am able to explain difficult topics to others. In addition to CHIPS a friend and I set up an email account and website for GCSE students to use if they need help with their homework, exam techniques, subject choices, or general life in sixth form.
Last year I went to Northumbria University for a Higher Education Summer School and then this year I completed the Sutton Trust Summer School at Bristol. I feel that Bristol was a most enlightening experience as it changed my perception of the university and the city. The summer school experience confirmed that I would love to study English or Languages; I decided this as I followed the humanities subject stream and attended lectures in a range of subjects including English and Languages.
Outside school I am currently working part-time at McDonalds where I am a Floor Manager. I recently attended a three day management conference in Leeds, where I ganied valuable communicative, organisational and managerial skills, I have developed these further as I am constantly talking to customers and staff. By completing my Duke of Edinburgh bronze, silver and gold awards I have demonstrated my commitment and determination. In my spare time I like to read, go to the cinema and socialise with friends.
After university I hope to go into advertising, travel journalism or teaching as in all these careers I can use my language and communication skills along with the transferable skills that I will have gained from my degree.

Having been born and lived all my life in Hungary, with an English father and Hungarian mother, I have always wanted to go to university in England and spend most of my summers working in England. Being bilingual gives me an ability to see both sides of the question, and examine things from different perspectives which I feel will be useful for my studies.

I am active outside school in subjects varying from writing a newsletter for the last decade,
playing and recently coaching football at local and national level, playing the cello to grade
7, winning a national young novelists’ short story competition and singing in a choir.

My interest in the course and the subjects which it consists of arises from three sources:

Firstly, ever since I learnt about the Roman Empire and jurisprudence in history lessons I
have always had a general interest in law, the history of law and the use of law, but my real
determination to study law at an academic level came when a friend of mine was accused of intending to commit murder and I was a character witness in his trial. This courtroom
experience at the age of 17 and the realisation that things are not black and white affected
me in a very direct way and ever since I have wanted to learn and understand more about how the rules or constitution that governs our society evolved from the Ten Commandments into Roman law and then into its current form.

Secondly, in primary school I was a member of a club called “Greenpici” (along the lines of
“Greenpeace”, “pici” meaning small in Hungarian) which was mainly about our natural
surroundings and environmental awareness. We visited several national parks, special
landscapes, planned and help build eco-friendly houses, learnt about green energy and took part in various environment related competitions – now, several years later I have realised that these are among the most valuable subjects I have learnt in life and studying them at an academic level is perhaps an appropriate progression of my interest.

Thirdly, mathematics has always been among my strongest subjects (after primary school I applied to and was accepted by a secondary school famous for its maths teaching) and later when I studied economics in geography lessons it struck me as a more usable and applicable version of maths with the beauty and logic of numbers and their correlations still remaining; ever since I have had a great interest in economics, but having no lessons in this subject in school (in Hungary very few schools offer economics at pre-university level because it isn’t part of the National Curriculum) limits me to extracurricular activities such as taking part in the yearly student monetary competition organised by the Hungarian National Bank or helping my girlfriend do her A-level economics homework with great enthusiasm.

Originally, I wanted to study Law as an undergraduate course, but after I discovered Land
Economy it seemed a course which is better fitting in regard to my various other interests and abilities, especially since it is a much broader course which – as a first degree – is exactly what I am looking for. I have travelled quite widely in Europe and been struck by the
differing attitudes that different peoples have towards their surroundings and other countries and this could be very interesting to study from the viewpoint of this course. An
undergraduate degree combining my academic eagerness to understand law, my strengths in Maths and my interest in economics and my love of nature and our surrounding environment seems composed for me. The fact that is at Cambridge only adds to its appeal.
