ALTHOUGH…BUT

ALTHOUGH

Biochemistry is difficult. It is a promising study, though.

A. Although/Though she is not extremely smart, but she works hard to get a high score.(X)
B. A lot of people want to be rich. Few of them achieve their goals, although.(X)

A. Although/Though she is not extremely smart, but she works hard to get a high score. (X)
Although she is not extremely smart, she works hard to get a high score.(O)
此例句中,「she is not extremely smart」與「she works hard to get a high score」可算作兩個句子。
B. A lot of people want to be rich. Few of them achieve their goals, although.(X)
A lot of people want to be rich. Few of them achieve their goals, though. (O)
The adverbial “although” means the same thing as “despite the fact that”. We use “although” at the beginning of a clause which contains information that contrasts in an unexpected or surprising way with information in another clause. For example:
Although it was raining, we went for a walk.
If it is raining, it is surprising that we went for a walk. The walk happened despite the rain. You can also feel that first it was raining, then we went for the walk. We cannot say this:
Although we went for a walk, it was raining.
If we went for a walk, it wasn’t surprising that it was raining. We probably already knew it was raining. The rain did not happen because of the walk. The rain was not an unexpected result of the walk.

BUT

She is happy about moving away, but also a little sad. (She is sad but not shocked)。
It was raining, but we went for a walk.
The coordinating conjunction “but” emphasizes the joining of two contrasting ideas. In the above sentence, you can feel that the two ideas contrast with each other. As a result, you can flip the sentence around.
We went for a walk, but it was raining.
You can add “but” to either of the clauses, but you can’t add “although” to either of the clauses. The coordinating conjunction “but” joins together two equally contrasting ideas. The adverbial “although” does not join together two equal ideas – one of the ideas is an unexpected result of the other clause.

常見英文錯誤: BECAUSE…SO

BECAUSE…SO

Because I love you (從), so I will go with you. (從) (X)
Becasue I love you (從), I will go with you.

What are the conjunctions because and so?
Both because and so are conjunctions which comment on actions.  They appear quite similar at first. However, because provides the reason for an action, and sogives the result of or response to an action. For example, look at the following sentences:
I went to America because I wanted to study English.
Because I wanted to study English, I went to America.
I wanted to study English, so I went to America.
What is the sentence structure?
Because is a subordinating conjunction, and should follow the structures below:
main clause (S+V+O/C)  |  because  |  subordinate clause (S+V+O/C)
Because  |  subordinate clause (S+V+O/C)  |  ,  |  main clause (S+V+O/C)
I didn’t but the dress  |  because  |  it cost too much.
Because  |  the dress cost too much  |  ,  |  I didn’t buy it.
So is a coordinating conjunction, and shows the result of an action. Here is the structure:
main clause (S+V+O/C)  |  ,  |  so  |  coordinate clause (S+V+O/C)
I didn’t sleep well last night  |  ,  |  so  |  I felt very tired today.
How are because and so used?
As has been mentioned, because and so connect two ideas. Because provides a reason for the action stated in the main clause. We can also say that because + subordinate clause explains a cause for the action. Moreover, it often introduces information the listener may not know. For example:
I stayed home because it snowed heavily.  =  The heavy snow caused me to stay home.
I stayed home because it snowed heavily.  =  The heavy snow caused me to stay home.
Tim quit because he hated his job.  =  Tim’s hatred for work made him quit.
On the other hand, so informs the listener or reader of the result or response to the main action. It may simply state the effect of the main clause, as in the following example:
I got an MBA last spring, so I found a better job this fall.
He saw his friend at the coffee shop, so they talked a long time.
Her doctor told her to exercise more, so she joined a gym last week.
However, so + coordinate clause may also show the logical continuation of two actions. For example:
Bill bought the peanut butter, so Kelly bought the jelly for their sandwiches.
Samantha went to the store for snacks, so Alan tidied up before the guests came for dinner.
I finished my work at home, so my wife took the kids to a movie.
In both examples, the coordinate clauses follow the main clauses to complete an act.

Why do humans act the way they do? It seems a simple question, but you’re as likely to know the answer as you are to learn of the meaning of life. But that doesn’t mean we don’t try.
When I applied for college, I took Psychology simply because I was curious, but now, it enthrals me; studying the different theories put forward as to why we do certain things, or why we don’t; delving into the minds of the depressed, the murderous or the deranged and generally trying to explain the things we do unconsciously, like conform. To what lengths can we know about ourselves and what we do? I want to know everything there is to know, to discover the answers, or understand the arguments and counter-arguments; to comprehend how our mind works and what purpose these functions have, or how we remember and recall; why we help or defend; how our mind can cause us illness. All these things are just a sample of what captivates me with Psychology, as well as reading the articles in ‘Psychology Review’, which I subscribed for this year.
Along with Psychology, I wish to study Philosophy, which has fascinated me since my first lesson. I’ve always been criticised for looking too deeply into things rather then just accepting them, but Philosophy showed me that I’m not the first, and certainly won’t be the last, to do so. It is a lesson that’s different from the rest in that it teaches you how to think, not what to think. It gives you ideas of why we are here, or what brought us here. It spans several key areas including Theology, Politics and Biology. So, by studying one subject, other subjects are dealt with. It’s unique and severely underestimated. It’s a difficult subject, but one that allows your own personality to have access.
This is why I think I’m a good applicant. I know I’m hardworking, and I’m definitely dedicated to this course. Moreover, there were numerous times during school where I was asked to help during certain activities, such as showing people around on open days or making speeches on awards evenings, therefore proving that I am responsible and reliable. Recently, I helped out at the college open evening for both Psychology and Philosophy, explaining to potential learners why I like the course and why they ought to consider taking it. I enjoy practical work and I did an experiment for my Psychology coursework, looking into the matching hypothesis, not long ago. This was fun and entertaining, and also involved great personal discipline and commitment to ensure it worked properly.
Although individual work like this is almost second nature, I find teamwork to be a strongpoint, due to my part-time job at a hotel. This involves a great deal of cooperation, otherwise it would be impossible to do the job properly. Every person has a part to play, and if they didn’t do their job, the rest of the circle would fall apart. The same applies in any team. Everyone needs to be involved and work properly for the rest of the team to advance. This became obvious when participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. Although extremely fun and rewarding, this required intense teamwork during the walks and the other sections involved dedication and hard work. These attributes can help whilst studying for the course.
It is for these reasons that the Joint-Award interests me. With it, I want to take a career in Psychology. I want to help this discipline in some way, or at least to ensure that what we know already is used to benefit others. I want to learn a great deal of knowledge to be able to go into the world and use it to its full potential, either by helping expand our knowledge, use our awareness properly or, even, passing on the theories to new psychologists.

PHILOSOPHY AUTOBIOGRAPHY EXAMPLE

“The first and simplest emotion which we discover in the human mind is curiosity”. I believe that when the mind is allowed to think outside the pre-defined constraints of society, the different directions in which it can travel are infinite.
Philosophy for me is the basis on which our lives are based and after reading Aristotle’s Ethics, it is fascinating to find that a lot of the beliefs I hold are so similar to those held by someone who lived over two thousand years ago. My main inspiration for taking Philosophy is Socrates and his unapologetic moral compass. Even when confronted with his own mortality, he refuses to take the easy option that would compromise what he believes in, for me Socrates incorporates everything I feel a good person should be. I am most interested in learning about Ancient Greek philosophy because I feel that in this day and age, the majority of people have lost sight of the basic principles of morals and ethics written by the likes of Plato and Aristotle all those years ago. I also believe like Descartes that I must forget everything I think I know about life and start from the beginning and the next step for me is university.
I have particularly enjoyed studying Dr Carol Dweck’s theories of Intelligence. I related to this study because I feel that it summed up my years at school almost perfectly. For most of my childhood up until the end of my teenage years my view on intelligence was, as Dr Dweck theorizes, the “Entity theory of intelligence”. Threatened by failure I have shied away from academic study, because I felt that failure indicated a lack of intelligence and because of this view I never committed myself to my studies. My views on this have radically changed over the last 7 years and I now believe that intelligence is interchangeable, that if curiosity is ignited in the right way, it can be enhanced with the only limitation being yourself.
I am currently a student of Psychology and Politics which I am really enjoying. It is exciting to be back in a learning environment and I feel that even though I have done a lot of reading at home, nothing compares to being able to debate a point and question reasoning face to face. I have always been an enthusiastic reader but my thirst for knowledge and understanding didn’t really explode until I was 18. The advancement in available material through the internet has helped me in my quest to learn and understand anything and everything. I have read a huge amount of material on many varying subjects from the philosophy of war and pacifism to the psychology behind serial killers and the study of love.
My questions are questions not only about the world around me but questions about myself as a human being, is my moral compass true and just? Or does an era a person lives in determine what they perceive to be right and wrong and why? For me this is a journey of self-discovery, analysing myself, what I am and how I have come to be the way I am is just as important to me as understanding the world around me.
I believe that stimulating the body is just as important as stimulating the mind so next year I will be taking part in the Virgin London Marathon on behalf of the World Wide Fund for Nature. I am also fairly well travelled and lived in Australia for 2 years, I also did charity work in Bolivia and have visited Peru, Thailand and Laos amongst others. Leonardo Da Vinci was once asked what the key to his genius was; his reply was simple “Sapere Vedere” which translates as ‘Knowing how to see’. For me understanding the mind and combining this with the basic principles of what it is to be aware, to be human, our interactions and what we think to be right and wrong is so important.

THERE HAS AN APPLE

THERE HAS AN APPLE.

“THERE HAS AN APPLE" SHOULD BE “THERE IS AN APPLE".

e.g., There was still nobody here at noon.
e.g., There have been(現在完成式)quite a few fights in the class in the past few weeks.

I CAN’T SWIM, TOO

I CAN’T SWIM, TOO.

e.g., He can swim, and I can, too. / He didn’t swim, and I didn’t, either.
e.g., He can swim, and so can I. / He will not swim, and neither will I.(注意這邊的will要改為肯定哦)

Look at the sentences below. A is the speaker. B answers, and sometimes
a third person C answers after B.
When you agree with the speaker…
AI like ice cream. BMe, too. or I do, too. or So do I.
A: I can play the piano. BMe, too. or I can, too. or So can I.
AI am hungry. B: Me, too. or I am, too. or So am I.
AI don’t like hamburgers. BMe, either. or Neither do I.
A: I can’t cook. BMe, either. or Neither can I.
A: I’m not tired. BMe either. or Neither am I.
In the sentences above, a third person (C) would say the same thing as the second person (B)
When you don’t agree with the speaker…
AI love fried fish. BI don’t. CI don’t either. or Neither do I.
AI am tall. BI’m not. CI’m not either. or Neither am I.
AI can sing. BI can’t. CI can’t either. or Neither can I.
AI don’t like chocolate. BI do. CI do, too.
AI’m not Canadian. BI am. CI am, too.
AI can’t speak English. BI can. CI can, too.
Note- there may be a few other possible ways to answer these questions.

HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS

HUNDREDS AND THOUSANDS

Hundred
故此,二百是two hundred,三百是three hundred,四百是four hundred,如此類推。
He made hundreds of mistakes in his report.
His father gave him five thousand dollars to pay the tuition fee.
Twenty thousand people in the area were affected by the earthquake.
Thousands of people participated in the marathon.
其他涉及數量的字,如million(1,000,000)、billion (1,000,000,000)、trillion(1,000,000,000,000)等,用法亦一樣。
His new book has sold two million copies.
The company saved 1.5 billion dollars by cutting headcount.
(1,500,000,000)
The hard disk has a storage capacity of ten trillion bytes.
The railway provides service to millions of passengers every year.
The government has injected billions of dollars to boost the economy.
I warned you trillions of times not to trust him.
