My love of languages was formed and nurtured in a classroom but it was developed into a true passion in the real world. A trip to Ecuador with World Challenge has made me realise I could never be content with knowing a language simply in a classroom context, because the true beauty of a language is in communication and the education that communication brings. My month trekking in Ecuador not only brought out of me a more confident and passionate Spanish speaker but also instilled in me the sense that a language is not just words, with it comes an entire culture and history which are as important as the words themselves.
Surprisingly, this year I have also discovered that my enthusiasm for languages does not simply lie with Spanish and French, which I am taking for A level, but also with the structure and development of language. When the prospect of a grammar lesson became an exciting part of my day it was clear to me that grammar had taken a hold. I am currently using my grammatical skills to assist in my completion of an online TEFL course which has improved my organisational skills and my ability to work independently. After reading introductory texts to linguistics I have realized a keen interest in endangered languages and am fascinated by the work of Peter Ladefoged throughout the world, documenting and researching languages. I believe it is a linguist’s responsibility to protect and document languages which may never be spoken again.
My studies of English literature have lead me to appreciate both English and foreign texts. Having read work by Lorca (including “Blood Wedding", “The House of Bernada Alba" and “Yerma")I was intrigued by the symbolism used. The contrast between English novels, with their factual and descriptive nature with strong social connotations, and Spanish literature which appears to be more poetic and to draw upon romantic and traditional folklore, interests me greatly. I have also found, through my reading of the poetic work of authors such as Pablo Neruda and Antonio Gala, that folklore and mysticism are strong themes for Spanish poets whereas they appear much less frequently in English poetry.
With a father living in France I have been deeply immersed in foreign culture for many years and through this I have found myself aspiring to possess the same ease and fluency of the native speakers. I hope to achieve this goal through my studies at university as well as a greater understanding of the history and literature of the Spanish world. I vehemently hope that furthering my linguistic skills, both in the Spanish language and in linguistics itself
will lead to a career as a diplomat working in South America, a part of the world that has captivated me entirely. Witnessing the development of a small community in Ecuador has increased my interest and awareness in international affairs; this coupled with my ability to communicate my thoughts effectively leads me to believe this is the right career for me.
Further to my academic studies I hope that at university I will be able to continue my dedication to sport, especially swimming which I currently compete in at a local level. At present I am on the sixth form charity committee and my support of charities is something I would like to continue whilst at university. I would also like to share my excitement for my chosen subjects with likeminded individuals from diverse and varied backgrounds. Moreover as an enthusiastic film fan I have begun to explore Spanish films such as “Volver", “El Orfanato" and “El Mar al Dentro" which have introduced me to a new approach to cinema in which harsh themes are tackled head on and the ability to discuss and explore these further is one I would relish. Finally, as an outgoing and dynamic character I look forward to an active social life.

Russian and Francophone cultures fascinate me. Already a devoted linguist due to my long-standing education in French and inspiring visits to Normandy and Paris; it was on a school history visit to the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg that really fell in love with Russian society and the Russian way of life. On my return, I wanted to immerse myself in everything Russian and I quickly set about learning to write the Cyrillic Alphabet, along with some basic phrases. The prospect of discovering something completely new and unknown captivated me. With my heart set on French and Russian, I am looking forward to expanding my linguistic capabilities with the challenge of learning a fresh language, so unrelated from both languages I have studied previously, yet being able to further develop both my knowledge and fluency of a language in which I am already confident.
In preparation for my course, I have decided to improve my understanding of the languages I intend to study through their film, music and literature. In recent months, I have enjoyed reading “Becket ou l’honneur de Dieu" by Anouilh, Zola’s “Une Page d’Amour", and Chekhov’s Four Major Plays in translation, all of which have given some insight into the literary heritage and customs of the individual countries. Watching films such as “La Cité des Enfants Perdus" and “Koktebel" has opened my eyes unto how these countries have developed and evolved their respective ideas and styles, and how their particular cultures have tackled the changes accompanying the modern world.
Always wanting to extend the use of languages in school life, and to help others who were finding difficulties in them, my teachers decided to appoint me as a French Subject Prefect. This mainly revolves around the mentoring of students from Years 7-9 who are struggling with the language, however also involved being a team leader on a Year 7 school visit to Boulogne and the completion of the Modern Foreign Languages Leader’s Award. Furthermore, I played a pivotal role in the running of activities and a café during European Languages week. My passion for languages also crosses over to my other hobbies. I am currently directing a performance of Tom Stoppard’s version of Chekov’s masterpiece, “The Seagull", and also used an excerpt from “Uncle Vanya" for an exam. I recently sang “Seul Devant ces Tables Vides" as well, in a local concert held at the Chapel Studio.
Outside the realm of language, I am part of the Air Training Corps, having reached Staff Classification. I have also completed my Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award with Expeditions in the Peak District (and will move onto the Gold Award in the summer of 2010). Additionally, I have attended Stagecoach Theatre Arts School for over ten years; having appeared in productions of “Blood Brothers" and “The Siege", reached Grade 7 in Drama with Merit as well as Grade 6 in Musical Theatre with Distinction. I have learned to dance in a variety of styles, including Ballet, Urban, and Modern Jazz. As part of a volunteering scheme, I spent an hour each week at St. Christopher’s Special School working with children suffering either with severe ADHD or Down’s Syndrome, to help them to acquire and improve communication abilities, as well as to expand their social skills and to promote a healthy interest in reading and numeracy.
I am looking forward to University with enthusiasm and hope to embrace the challenges and opportunities which studying a language of which I have prior experience and a new one will bring. Furthermore, with my dedication to extra-curricular activities, I will be able to take an active role in much during my time in higher education, especially in pursuits which are language based.

Although I was too young to witness at first hand the heady days of revolution that took place in the East as the Iron Curtain was being swept aside, I was privileged enough to live and work in a number of the countries that arose in its wake as they made the gradual transition from the pre- to the post-1989 world. From my arrival in Poland in 2001 as a young backpacker, through eighteen months working and studying in Ukraine, to my most recent work in Kyrgyzstan, I was always excited by the spirit of change found across the region. From the dynamism and optimism of the new EU states, to the uncertainties of life in the ‘Wild East’ of Central Asia, it was fascinating to live in newly independent nations as they grappled with questions of national identity, the role of the state, and the value of democracy. Speaking Russian has not only been vital to my working life in the last few years, but has also been a source of much satisfaction and enjoyment; this is why I wish to take my language skills to the next level at university and ultimately pursue a career in journalism or diplomacy.

With my interest in Eastern Europe already awakened by an overland trip to Sarajevo, I joined a GAP project in 2002 and spent the year teaching in Poland. This led to further teaching work in Kiev and Bishkek. An eastward progression that reflected my developing interest in the Soviet Union and my particular curiosity about the states of Central Asia which were becoming increasingly important geo-political players.

After teaching for a year in Bishkek, I worked for five months on the Times of Central Asia, principally as a copy editor. I also wrote several articles, advised on design, and had a series of political cartoons published. Feeling restricted by the rigid editorial policy, I left the Times in the spring of 2008 to found an independent magazine with a local business partner. The magazine, named the Spektator (www.thespektator.co.uk) and distributed throughout Bishkek, was first published in October 2008 and is now on its eighth issue. The effort to obtain financial backers, work with a print house, and get a green light from the Justice Ministry in one of the world’s more ‘bureaucratic’ nations was a great benefit to my Russian skills as well as a sharp insight into the local culture. 

Throughout 2008 I was also working a 30-hour week for CAMP, a Swiss backed public foundation that aims to help mountain communities achieve sustainable development. My duties involved co-authoring and editing a major publication, writing PR articles, editing reports for our international donors, and assisting with multimedia projects. My work involved several research trips around Kyrgyzstan and an assignment in Dushanbe, Tajikistan.

I return to England with not only a personal perspective on how the relationship between the West and the East is evolving, but also with knowledge and experience that I hope will be an invaluable resource to me during the course of my studies.

I have many interests and hobbies including a love of books. My location has had a strong influence on my reading, and I have particularly enjoyed works by Gombrowicz, Chekhov, Dostoyevsky, and Aitmatov. Aside from fiction, I am a subscriber to the Economist and enjoy the writing of Orlando Figes, Christopher Hitchens and Ryszard Kapuszcinski. Living in Kyrgyzstan allowed me to indulge my passion for the mountains. In addition to helping the Alpine Fund charity with their mountain excursions for disadvantaged youth, I hiked extensively in the Tien Shan, learned basic rock climbing techniques and climbed several mountains over 4500m.

he decision to apply for this course was easy to make for me indeed. Partly because Spanish-speaking zone is such a culturaly rich and diverse area, and partly because of my aunt being crazy about Latin America, who managed to pass her bug on me. What I found the most fascinating at first, being a little girl, were stories about Eldorado, a misterious lost city. As I grew up, I began to indulge myself in other ‘products’ of Hispanic culture area, such as books by Marquez and Llosa, Che Guevara’s diaries, history of Pisarro’s conquest and even Daniken’s theories concerning the extraterriestral origin of Nazca’s signs. I believe my personal qualities will help me to make the most of this studies if I get accepted. I consider myself as a broad-minded person, respectful for other’s views on life. I like to get socially involved, which give me a sense of fulfilment, and that’s why I volunteered for Amnesty International, hoping that my little actions might help to improve other people’s lives, or even save them. I also attended some conferences organised by AI dealing with urgent questions. The present academic year, however, I’ve been spending working as an au pair in London. It gave me an opportunity to prove my responsibility and test myself in an unknown enviromnment. I also observe my stay in UK made me more sure of myself, confident to speak my mind even if it is completely different from the opinion of others. I enjoy learning languages; I reckon I have a natural ability to pick them up easily. I will be taking IELTS exam in June. Apart from English, I know some German and basic French. Unfortunately I have never had a chance to deal with Spanish.

I realise not all of them are impressive; but that is because education level in high school that I attended was challenging. I could have had much better grades in another school and not being a hard-working student, I am sure. My class had a ‘language and European Union ‘ profile. When it comes to my other achievements, I participated in quite a number of competitions, like English language and theme essay writing ones, and have been involved in editing our school magazine, maintaining its good quality level. I took advantage of the chance to go to Germany, on a student exchange to Fulda. The main aspects that I would like to explore are Latin American culture in its all aspects, changes in these multinational societies and the complexity of political situation. And obviously to achieve a good Spanish level, so that I could communicate with native speakers without any difficulties. When it comes to my other interests, I am really fond of art and enjoy sightseeing and visiting art galleries. I do not do much sport to tell the thruth…but I really enjoy my ballet classes. I am keen on travelling, although the only place I’ve been outside Europe is Egypt. But I am hoping to visit India this summer. For my future plans, I consider engaging for a non-governmental agency like Amnesty, and improving people’s lives; becoming a travel books writer or working in tourism section, dealing with Spanish-speaking countries. I strongly believe it is essential to know what we are aiming at in our lives.

My passion for French has certainly flourished throughout my education, a language and culture that have, without doubt had an enormous impact upon how we, as British citizens, live and communicate today. Language skills equip us with the ability to communicate, to read and to understand both our own and other cultures. This is of course essential for any sort of international communication whatsoever; relying on interpreters isn’t always reliable as much of the intended meaning can often be lost in translation. I have always believed that this is a waste and have strived for fluency in order to prevent such waste on my part. A degree in the French language would enable me to achieve this goal as it is a longstanding aspiration of mine to immerse my self in and become part of French culture. A recent exchange to Rouen allowed me the chance to apply my classroom knowledge to everyday surroundings. I managed to do so quite successfully and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. This, among other experiences, has led me to believe that time spent studying in France would undoubtedly improve my capabilities in the best way possible. I believe that my interest in other languages and culture is also of benefit when studying history. I have a great desire to learn about the past, the events within it that make the world what it is today and current events continue it’s evolution. This interest is deeply rooted, from childhood I was fascinated by tales such as When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit, and later on Suite Francaise. This curiosity has led me to become absorbed by topics such as the system of Apartheid in South Africa, the making of modern Russia and the Nazi state. All of which highlight the varying impacts of war, racism and global politics and their relevance throughout the past and certainly throughout the future. The world is continually evolving in terms of politics, economy, environment and I am finding that my historical knowledge enables me to recognise and understand when history really is repeating itself. My passion for language is not merely for the sake of communication, but often for the beauty of words themselves. The study of English literature, and my own extensive reading, has allowed me to appreciate this beauty. The way words can be woven around a reader, captivating them, that they can transport a person to another world. Hundreds of lives, realistically impossible, can be lead through books, multiplying your own life thousands of times. The insight they offer to other people’s imaginations and their sense of humour is what appeals to me the most and it was Roald Dahl that taught me that. Participation in several college excursions has allowed me to gain an insight into many things, from the works of Van Gogh to the West End. Several trips to London have enabled me to learn of much of the city, and of the history of the entire country. The Louvre in France offering similar tastes of colourful and often bloody French history, and also of modern day experiences. This has simply served to give me a taste of the culture I so desperately crave. For the last two years I have spent a week in Romania, working alongside a charity, aiming to get gypsy children into education. Whilst I was there I managed to learn a lot about the people, the country, their religions and their language. All of this absorbed me completely and I plan to go back in the future, if only to see that only one more child has gone to school. These children cry out for an education, making me appreciate mine all the more. It is this that makes me work hard in order to achieve my goals, it also makes me want the best I can get for myself as I have the opportunity to do this, I refuse to waste it.

Before I participated in a French Exchange to Montelimar in 2005, I had found French interesting but didn’t particularly think that it would be important in my longer term career aims. However, whilst in Montelimar, I found myself fully immersed in French culture and began to realise the breadth and beauty of the language and the importance of being able to express myself effectively in another language. This led me to exploring other European Languages to add to my knowledge. My sixth form college offered GCSE Italian and it seemed like the perfect opportunity to learn another language. I love the country and have visited there many times with my family.To further my knowledge and understanding of the language and culture, I jumped at the chance to gain work experience in the French Speaking area of Liege, Belgium. I found this an enjoyable and rewarding challenge particularly when it came to teaching younger students English as it gave me an insight into how others learn our language as well as helping me with my studies. This helped my decision to continue my language studies at university.
I have particularly enjoyed the immigration aspects of the French A2 course and the environmental section of the GCSE Italian course. I am also studying A2 Geography, which has allowed me to gain knowledge of the world. I would like to experience many different cultures and languages allowing me to improve my language skills. I am looking forward to a trip to China as this will allow me to experience the culture and language of a non-European country. I am studying A2 Maths which means I have to be organised, keep up to date with work and meet deadlines. AS Geology means that my work has become more detailed, as in field sketches which require as much detail as possible.
Outside of college, I participate in the Scunthorpe Co-Op Choir and I have been involved for 9 years now. This shows I am dedicated, committed and reliable for concerts, rehearsals and tours. It has taught me how to work as part of a team and cooperate fully to its success. The choir have also visited Paris, Australia (singing at the torch ceremony at the Olympics) and Wales and entered several prestigious competitions. In preparation for Paris, I taught the choir how to pronounce the words in Dome Epais. I am a young leader for Brownies and this has taught me how to be a leader. I am very committed to this as I have been part of Girl Guiding since I was 5. I like seeing the Brownies enjoying the activities and I am currently training to become an adult leader. I play for the college Netball Team so I work as part of different teams but also individually and I was captain of the rounders team at school so I had to be organised enough to distribute action plans. I was a prefect at school and a student ambassador for college. I have participated in college open days and evenings as a reference point for prospective students and feel I am a reliable student. I also play the clarinet to Grade 3.
As a part-time job, I work at Argos where I feel I am a trustworthy team member yet I can still work under my own initiative to do things before being requested to do so. I enjoy meeting the staff there and I get to meet a wide range of people from all backgrounds which has improved my communication skills. During the summer, I worked at a school where I created systems to organise the uniform orders and SEN files. I also helped as a French Assistant within some of the GCSE French lessons.
These activities have made me a self-motivated person with a wide variety of interests and I am eager to begin my degree course.

This quote by Oliver Wendell Holmes sums up perfectly the reason why I feel so passionate about the languages spoken around the world. I feel that language is essential to the world today for without language there can be no progress. Language provides an insight into all aspects of a countries culture and I find this very interesting. The ability to speak in different languages opens up a whole new set of opportunities and is excellent for ones personal development. It is this enthusiasm that drives me to study Languages at University.
I first developed an interest in foreign languages when I was a little girl in primary six and I began to learn Spanish for the first time. I found it fascinating, as many people find things they do for the first time, but that fascination has never left me it has only increased. Having studied Spanish for almost eight years and completing my Higher Spanish last year I managed to convince my teachers to let me sit French even though I have no previous knowledge of French except a few failed attempts at conversation while on holiday. This is a difficult challenge but it is one that I am excited and willing to tackle. Languages are a key part of me personally not just my education. I listen to music in many different languages mainly Spanish and Italian, I love foreign films and have many friends from all different parts of the world and I love learning about their culture and their lifestyle.
My eagerness to study languages at University is due to the fact that I am very keen to further my knowledge of languages and get the qualifications I need so that I can take my passion and turn it into my career. In taking this step at University it will bring me closer to my goal. While I am very much a family girl, I would not hesitate to seize the opportunity to spend a year abroad and become a part of another culture. It would be an experience that would benefit all aspects of my development both academically and personally.
Being a Prefect at school for the second year and a carer in my home, I consider myself a mature and responsible person. As an active member of St Andrews Hospice, I take part in almost all of the races and events annually although I do not consider myself a particularly sporty person. This year I am a Buddy at school and I find this a very interesting experience for both the first years and myself. We are working together to make them feel more comfortable about their place in the school but the process is working both ways and is developing my confidence about my role in the school. I am currently waiting on a placement for a part time job in a Call Centre. I think that this job will be beneficial for developing my organisation and communication skills and I will gain more confidence and independence. When I am not working or socialising I am reading. Reading along with languages and Greek Mythology are my passions. I am an avid reader and I have recently delved into foreign books such as the works of Gabriel Garcia Marquez and Harry Potter in Spanish. The combination of these interests is yet another step of furthering my language skills, as I am anxious to do.
For a while now I have been interested in working within the Civil Service or European Parliament as an interpreter or translator. Studying at University is the stepping stone that will ensure that I can achieve my dream.
