“The limits of my language mean the limits of my world” – Ludwig Wittgenstein
Even as a young child languages have been important to me. I used to try to sing along with hit tunes on the radio and watched movies without subtitles from an early age, all to improve my English skills. I used to converse in English with my mother at the breakfast table and drag my little sister into it as well, and she hated me for it. I understood that the knowledge of a language other than your own expands the boundaries of life and gives you the possibility to experience more of the world in a greater scale. I even took the time to learn some Turkish, by myself at the age of 16, and to this day I still remember a few words. Language is a barrier that can be overcome. English was my first step towards broadening my horizon and I plan to make Arabic my next.
I enrolled in a basic Arabic course for one semester outside my normal studies, at Folkuniversitetet in Gothenburg to try to learn the basics of the language and learn a few helpful phrases to expand the vocabulary I already had. This January I am leaving for Cairo, Egypt to enroll at a language institute where I will be taking a beginners course expanding over three and a half month in Egyptian spoken Arabic and Modern written Arabic.
I think that my admiration for the Middle-East started when I was very young. I saw a movie which contained images of these amazing large, dome-shaped buildings and the vast orange desert horizons. Aladdin might not be the most accurate in describing today’s Middle-East but it sure got my attention back then. I remember watching that movie over and over again and dreaming of the street markets and princess Jasmines’ pet tiger Rajah.
When I got the opportunity to move to the “real” Middle-East, to the United Arab Emirates and work, I didn’t hesitate a bit. I organized my flight and left only a few months after I was offered the job. Travelling through the desert each morning to my office was an amazing start of the day. My fascination for the Middle-East really came to grow into love. My two year stay in Ras Al Khaimah offered a lot of possibilities: Not only work-related but on a more personal level as well. I met a wide variety of people from so many regions of the world, many of them from the war struck countries in the area. I heard many stories from friends from Palestine, telling me about having to sleep on floors in refugee camps; being frightened of missiles and the military. Whilst hearing others growing up in Lebanon worried about cluster bombs and landmines when walking to school. You get very humble and realise how fortuned you are and at the same time you understand that you need to get involved somehow, try to take your own luck in life and to pass it on to someone else. This is what made me to take the decision to move back home to finish my pre-university studies to have the possibility to enter University and finish my degree.
I hope to work within the UN or a related organisation based in these countries, specifically working with women and youth. When I got back to Sweden the first thing I did was to get in contact with ‘Doctor without Borders’ and ‘Ship to Gaza’ to see if there was some way for me to be of assistance, even if it was just financial.

“In our age there is no such thing as keeping out of politics, all issues are political issues.” Politics for me is the power to effect change, to make a difference whether that is to the detriment or advantage to society as a whole. Politics enforces all that we hold dear; social justice, equality, tolerance. My specific interest in politics is broadly based upon Orwell’s principle of the universal nature of politics, together with not only the politics of today but rather the steady progression of democracy in the UK. Drawing comparisons with political and civil unrest in the Middle East, the insurmountable power of the West and balancing the use of democracy and war especially with the unraveling of recent global political crises.
Politics is an ever changing subject, which requires skills in analysis, debate and research, whilst also possessing an open mind to be empathetic to the views of society as a whole. A Level Politics has allowed me to look further into the dynamics of British and American Politics, considering the effect of these two nations’ power on the world stage, encompassed with trips to Parliament and the Senate. I have also attended conferences on American Politics entitled ‘Congress to Campus’ and have been involved in a student question time, having entered a question for our incumbent MP. An emphasis on further research fuelled my decision to complete an EPQ, looking at the history of American foreign policy.
Studying Economics has given me an interest in domestic and overseas fiscal policy and understanding of the tumultuous legacy of previous governments when considering the nations finances. English Literature has developed my essay writing skills, having particularly enjoyed critical analysis of poetry, both past and present. The study of Miller’s ‘Broken Glass’ questioned the perception of the American Dream and the consequences of fascism in 1938 Germany to an economically and socially unstable America. The study of Sociology encourages research of new and differing theoretical views of all of society’s institutions. I have particularly enjoyed further research into the sociological and political ideology of Marx. Though his views could be deemed much too radical to interpret British society, his interpretations of society still resonate all over the world. The rich exploit the poor with little constriction by society’s institutions such as the government and legal system.
My upbringing has given me a strong working class ethic, constantly reminding me that success cannot be achieved without commitment, sacrifice and hard work. Opportunities at school allowed me to stand as a candidate to represent my county in an election to become a member of the National Youth Parliament, allowing me to participate actively in school activities and acting as an advocate for my fellow pupils. Rewarding activities included establishing an after school Food and Nutrition Club for Year 7 pupils and membership of the school debating society. Tasks included lobbying town officials for fair trade status for my hometown, allowing me to develop and debate my own ideas along with those of my peers. Amongst my proudest achievements is being awarded a place in the National Academy of Gifted and Talented Youth. I have also enjoyed fundraising activities for Help for Heroes and an expedition to Tanzania, as well as membership of Amnesty International.
When asked why I want to further my political education to degree level the answer is simple. I want to be a participant, not an observer, in the molding of an ever changing, diverse society through politics. I want to learn about the world from the grass roots up. I want to make a difference.

When I was a child my favorite place was the airport. I love the confusion inside it,listening to many different languages and seeing different cultures meet in only one place. I consider that my interest for the social movement arise from that place. I was born in Odessa into a Russian family and when I was only five my parents decided to move to Crotone,in the south of Italy. Nowadays I think that I’m very lucky to know two cultures so different one from the other. This has prompted me to take an interest on how the traditions and the events affect the human psyche and how the man himself can revolutionize the environment in which he lives. The occurrences that particularly influence me are: The Arab spring and the Bosnian War; But also the land where I live it’s a hot zone, inasmuch in Crotone there is one of the most crowded immigrant reception centre and my little town is “invaded” by new populations. For me it’s a great opportunity to know directly the victims of cruel wars or dramatic situations and many times they shared with me their stories, hopes and current problems like the integration in a new country. My main ambition is to help every single individual to have a respectable existence,to be free and satisfied, because every satisfied person will establish a well-functioning society as Democritus affirmed-’The native land of a good soul is the whole earth’-. While I’m studying philosophy I become fond of psychology since ancient philosophers like Aristotle or Epicurus realized the importance of the human inner being. My favorite psychologists are Freud and Gordon Allport. I like learning new languages beyond:Italian,Russian,Ukrainian,English and Spanish I would like to learn Portuguese or a Middle Eastern language. I consider language an essential component to understand the identity of a country,so I’m studying Latin and ancient Greek that are the basis of many European languages and the same ancient Roman-Greek way of thinking are the cornerstones of occidental culture. Since I was ten my parents gave me the opportunity to study english abroad in summer and I could visit many Anglophone countries. Travelling has become for me a passion, not only to see new places but also to meet new way of thinking and people.Last summer I was in Haiti I can say that I admire their culture and their pragmatist in every situation. Beside the school I love painting, taking photos (I also participated to an exhibition in my school),looking after animals and practicing many sports like:tennis, snowboard, ski and classic ballet (that I exercise for 10 years). Studying in United Kingdom it’s a great opportunity because it has one of the most innovative education system in the world. I hope that I’ll be able to join in this environment and contribute, even in a small way, to the improvement of the society.

I have always been interested in the way politics shapes the world and current affairs. Through my quest to understand the nature of corruption, altruism, driving force of conflict and the nature of capitalism I have encountered various ideologies. I often blamed religion for causing conflict and poverty. However I have come to believe that though people may state “in the name of god” to justify their digressions, religious ideology is a downstream effect of fundamentally political issues.
Raised in London by parents of Turkish origin, I have often been affected by cultural differences. This has assisted me in understanding the similarities and differences between western and near Middle Eastern politics and cultures. Middle Eastern politics is my primary area of interest as my historical awareness of the region allows me to engage in the conflicts it faces. However, I feel that improving my knowledge of the contemporary history of the region would help me to better understand the events occurring.
Having relatives who are graduates of Political Science I have always been interested in politics and have tried to participate in as many political debates as possible. I try to widen my spectrum of knowledge on political theory by reading such books as: Our Common Interest; Political Liberalism (John Rawls); Society Must be Defended (Michel Foucault) and Political Writings (John Locke). Participating in seminars with guest speakers Boris Johnson, Alistair Campbell and Peter Walker, I was able to analyse how politics works in practice.
Working at the Turkish embassy through the election period allowed me to further analyse the reaches of the political sphere as well as signifying the contribution of pressure to my working performance. My organization skills also proved to be useful when arranging meetings between diplomats and the ambassador.
A reoccurring issue I encountered was Turkey’s potential entry to the European Union; an issue which held relevance at a conference between Turkish MPs and academics which I had attended. My primary perception was the extent to which the benefits of the EU, were, in my opinion exaggerated. I believe that Turkey’s entry would be militarily strategic, the policy’s required for turkey to embody would enhance living standards, Free Trade in Europe would also be economically advantageous. However, with consideration of opposition such as Sarkozy, I would say that Turkey’s geographical positioning, and it’s religion would disadvantage the countries acceptance into the EU.
During the summers of 2002-06 I taught English and Drama in an orphanage for children who lost their parents in the Adapazari earthquake. Teaching and caring for the children required three main skills, patience, perseverance and prudence, all of which I improved through my experience. The devastation visible in such natural disasters highlights the role of governmental preparation and contingency planning in the prevention of hazard realization.
I have always been and continue to be a keen thespian. Among my numerous performances I most enjoyed scripting and performing a 17th Century stage version of Hogarth’s painting: Gin Lane. Through pursuing theatrics as a passion since age three, I have acquired confidence, the ability to listen and to express. The demands of producing a play are immense and success is only achieved through shared responsibility and dedication of the entire cast. Similar principles are applicable to my orchestral activities, playing the Clarinet and Piano since a young age has demanded strong commitment and discipline. The ability to work in teams, respect others and share ideas is not only essential to an effective government but also is a basic requirement in any business or establishment.
Studying for my A levels taught me key skills such as prioritising, practicality, organisation and self motivation, these skills are transferable to my future course or career.

Since childhood, I have been fascinated by the constantly changing world that we live in, wanting to understand and explore the causes and effects of current and future human interactions. During my teenage years I started listening to the BBC World Service and reading internationally recognized journals and magazines. I have become convinced that a third level education relevant to world affairs would help me gain knowledge that would allow me to pursue a wide range of possibilities. My current career ambition is to find a suitable role within an international organisation, such as the UN, ideally with specific focus on assisting people who have been displaced due to civil unrest, war, famine or other natural disaster.
I was born in Australia to a family of political refugees who had escaped communist Czechoslovakia. After my country’s Velvet Revolution, my family returned to Prague, the capital of a then newly formed democracy. This radical change helped to widen my perspective and see the world from a different point of view. Today I am a bi-national avid traveler, having visited more than 40 countries. I have attended six exchange programmes with partner schools: one in Sweden, one in Germany and four in France. I have also been on two volunteer programmes with Earthwatch, firstly being in Spain, where we helped gather information to design marine protected areas and then in Tanzania, helping to determine the impact of forest fragmentation through monitoring rainforest bird populations. The Tanzanian expedition in particular was an eye opener, not only because of the local cultural differences and the poverty, but also because of the amount of teamwork and hardship we had to face living in a remote area like the Usambara Mountains. The experience also made me aware of how foreign countries and NGOs are helping to alleviate the poverty in Tanzania.
At school, my position as the only girl in my class has ensured that I have maintained a somewhat independent approach to my studies. I have chosen a broad range of subjects for my Final Exams, not only because I like challenges, but also because I believe I will obtain a lot of all-around knowledge and skills from them: Mathematics and Physics have helped me understand the physical and abstract world around me, while Czech and English have shown the beauty of literature, which has become a great passion for me, Herman Hesse being my favourite author. I currently represent my school in the Prague Model of the United Nations, where I am I delegate for Germany in the Third Committee.
Aside from academia, I have a passion for a number of hobbies. Ever since I first visited Egypt, as a 12 years old, I have enjoyed egyptology, with all the facts and mysteries surrounding it. I enjoy the arts in many aspects opera has a special place for me, as my mother was, in her youth one of Czechoslovakia’s most promising opera singers. I also enjoy Photography, particularly black and white. I held a small exhibition of my work in Prague last year. As a child I enjoyed ballet, and even competed in local events. Now, sports have become more important to me: while being in the Czech Quiksilver Snowboarding team, I have achieved commendable results in freestyling contests on a national level. I am looking forward to improve my technique and hope to participate in international competitions. Every Summer I spend at least one month in France perfecting my French. Apart from speaking fluent French, English, Czech and Slovak, I have been studying German at school and have also been trying to self-study Hebrew. I am a active member of Mensa, Net-Aid.org, Greenpeace and the Czech–Japanese association.
I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that studying in the UK will present. I value very greatly the chance to be a part of such a reknowned institution as your college is, and I believe that in some small way I may add to its whole, through my personality, work effort and experiences to date.

Being thanked by someone for making their day after working a long, hard and stressful shift is the most rewarding feeling I have ever experienced. I want to spend my life creating a place for people to escape and made to feel special.
For a hotel brand to succeed there needs to be a strong focus on marketing, which is one of my main interests. I studied Advertising and Media at University and although I realised that I didn’t want to enter the marketing industry for my career, I did know that I would want it to be an important aspect of my future work. I have some experience working with small business’ and also my local council discovering how they use marketing and media to their advantage. I have volunteered at a family run farm during the launch of their catering leg of the business where I was involved heavily in the research of existing products on the market, pricing, packaging and designing promotional tools. I was also lucky enough to be offered a placement with Coventry City Council assisting with the relaunch of their city magazine, CityVision where I wrote a detailed report of my findings from market research, created an ideas board for the layout and graphics of the magazine and also learnt how to write press releases.
I left University after one year and enrolled in a course in a Professional Cookery NVQ in the hope that I could work my way around the different areas of the hotel operation and eventually work my way up into hotel management. I have worked as a chef in numerous establishments and have an excellent knowledge of food hygiene and safety standards as well as supervisory experience. I have also worked in several other roles relevant to Hotel Management; waiting tables, bar tending, house keeping and as a Wedding and B&B Assistant.
I worked as a chef for a season for a reputable activity holidays company. Supervising four members of staff meant that I was expected to lead, motivate and train as well as being under immense pressure to cook for up to two hundred and forty people alone. I was responsible for ensuring the completion of kitchen admin and that food hygiene and safety standards were adhered to at all times. During my time supervising I learnt a lot about professional boundaries, motivating a team, gaining respect, working to individuals strengths, understanding competency levels and responding well to pressure. Working in a leadership position was what affected my final decision to study Hotel Management.
My passion for hospitality is not limited to my working life. I am an avid reader of T+L, marketing and branding and hotel management books. During my spare time I enjoy disappearing for weekends with friends or exploring different places to eat. I love traveling and have recently spent three months traveling around Thailand and Vietnam where I first began considering a Hotel Management Degree after staying in a diverse range of accommodation. Being a regular consumer myself reinforces the importance of excellent customer care and thus standing out from competitors.
When I left higher education my plan wasn’t to return but my passion and enthusiasm for the subject lead me to explore my options once again. The Hotel School concept is one I am extremely excited about. It would give me the opportunity to study and put my knowledge into practice immediately, making my studies more relevant and memorable. I hope to obtain a place with The Edge Hotel School to achieve a recognised qualification from a quality partnership in order for my CV to stand out from other applicants when applying for graduate schemes with luxury hotel brands.
My goal is to spend time working with top class hotel brands improving and developing my skills and knowledge until I feel prepared enough to open my own family run hotel in Vietnam.
I am confident that with the help of the practitioners on the course I will be able to develop my existing skills and knowledge to an exceptional standard, ready for the world of management.

Hospitality Industry is one of the fastest-growing industries, whose great variety makes it very interesting area of working. I have never thought about the fascination and the opportunities which this industry offers until the day I started to work as a tourist manager assistant two years ago. It was a summer job which was supposed to fill up my free time and increase my budget. I knew I was going to like it because I am keen on meeting new people and visiting tourist destinations, but I did not even suspect how much it would affect me. As an assistant I was required to help the tourist manager accommodate the guests and organize different kinds of entertainment. This job gave me opportunity to become acquainted with the work of such people as hotel, club and event managers. I was deeply impressed by their diligence to satisfy every need of their customers. I have realized the responsibility of their profession, but I have also understood how satisfied they are when their clients are happy. I will never forget the face of the tourist manager I worked with when the guests thanked him for the perfect holiday. His face was beaming. Despite the fact I was only an assistant I felt satisfaction too seeing that the tourists were content with our work. This feeling of gratification and even happiness was the main reason why I decided to study Hospitality management. I am fond of knowing more about each sector of Hospitality industry, in which I see my future.
Every manager needs leadership skills. I think I have gained them by participating in diverse activities. I was one of the students choosen to stage a play for the hundredth anniversary of my primary school. The most difficult task of the organization of the play was to make the children deliver an inspired performance. Eventually I managed to motivate them not only to be good actors but to enjoy acting itself. It produced positive response. The passion I have for foreign languages ensured my successful participation in the English Language Festival of my school. In this way I have improved my organizational and presentation skills. Being a member of both Eco-club-Mathew and Interact club, the aim of which is charity, I have gained a sense of teamspirit.
As a lover of nature the thing I like to do the most is to go hiking and on picnics. I find the nature of England very attractive and I am looking forward to going there and seeing its beauties. Dancing is my hobby too. I have been dancing a modern ballet for five years. This is my way to relax and keep fit.
I am reliable and positive person, who enjoys challenges and never gives up. I dream of managing a hotel, even a chain of hotels. I realize how great my ambitions are and how hard I must work to achieve them but I think it is most important to have a wish and will. When one who has strong wishes is self-confident and self-motivated, when he is patient and determined he can fulfill them. I know that besides all these qualities I must also have skills in order to succeed in this industry in which there is such a competition. Studying hospitality management I will acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to be a prosperous hospitality manager.
In ten years I imagine myself possessing a five-star hotel on the French Riviera and the first thing I should do to achieve my goal is to take this course at your university.
