TIME FLIES

英文諺語 TIME FLIES 光陰似箭

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
MEANING
Time flies (when you’re having fun). Time passes quickly, as in It’s midnight already? Time flies when you’re having fun, or I guess it’s ten years since I last saw you—how time flies. This idiom was first recorded about 1800 but Shakespeare used a similar phrase, “the swiftest hours, as they flew,” as did Alexander Pope, “swift fly the years.”
Time flies when you tie a clock to a bird, time flies when you throw a clock across the room and time also flies if you drop it out of an airplane. Time also flies when you are having fun, learning something interesting and those precious moments you have with loved ones. I believe time flies in so many ways that we need to cherish every second we spend with friends, boyfriends, girlfriends, aunts, uncles, cousins grandmas, grandpas, new and old teammates/classmates and life in general. Time is both a blessing and a curse, a blessing in the good times, and a curse when we step into the unknown.
Sometimes you never know what you got until it is gone. Hold on to the people closest to you closer because you never know what can happen in the next few seconds, minutes, or hours. Appreciate the small things people do for you, whether it is a hug, a friendly hello, or just a smile. Every little bit of kindness can go mile. You never know what fate has in store for you, and you never know what you have got until it is gone.

EXAMPLE
“I didn’t really think it was so late when the party ended. Doesn’t time fly? Time simply flew while the old friends exchanged news."

THOSE WHO LIVE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULDN’T THROW STONES 英文諺語

THOSE WHO LIVE IN GLASS HOUSES SHOULD NOT THROW STONES 投鼠忌器

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
MEANING
Do not criticize others if you have similar weaknesses yourself.
“People who live in glass houses should not throw stones" reminds us that we should be careful how we treat other people (with our words and actions) because we can all be easily hurt. People “throw stones" at other people to try to hurt them, and one way that people try to hurt other people is by saying bad things about them. If you lived in a “glass house" it would be very easy for other people to hurt you by throwing stones at you. “People who live in glass houses should not throw stones" means that we should not say insulting things to other people because they could easily do the same thing to us.

This proverb is so well known that it is often shortened.
EXAMPLE
“Lucy told me I had bad taste in music. I replied by telling her that people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones."

THERE’S NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE

英文諺語 THERE’S NO SMOKE WITHOUT FIRE 無風不起浪;有煙必有火;事出有因

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
MEANING
If people are saying that someone has done something bad but no one knows whether it is true, it probably is true. There is usually some truth behind every rumor.
Also, where there’s smoke there’s fire. A suspicion or rumor usually has a basis in fact, as in When the sales figures continued strong but the company still wasn’t making money, he suspected something was wrong—there’s no smoke without fire. First stated in the late 1300s, this expression appeared in numerous proverb collections from 1546 on and remains current today.
EXAMPLE
“She claims that they were just good friends and that they never slept together but there’s no smoke without fire, that’s what I say."

THERE IS NO ACCOUNTING FOR TASTE

英文諺語 THERE IS NO ACCOUNTING FOR TASTE 人各有所好

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
MEANING
You can’t explain why some people like/prefer certain things, which others don’t like/prefer. This is an expression that is a little sarcastic. You would say it if for example you were shown how someone had decorated their room. You think the colors are too bright and do not go well together and you can’t understood why anyone would like it. In subjective matters of taste, people have wildly different opinions; disagreements about matters of taste cannot be objectively resolved.
EXAMPLE
" Look at that purple and yellow car! There’s no accounting for taste."

SPEAK OF THE DEVIL

英文諺語 SPEAK OF THE DEVIL (AND HE SHALL APPEAR) 說曹操曹操就到

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
Also: Talk of the devil (and he is sure to appear)
MEANING
Something you say when the person you were talking about appears unexpectedly; talk about a certain person, and that person appears (used when someone appears whom you have just been talking about).
ORIGIN
This phrase, in its current usage, is a lighthearted way of referring to someone who has unexpectedly come in when being talked about, however, prior to the 20th century, it wasn’t a lighthearted one. The full form of this phrase is “Speak of the Devil and he will appear”, and was meant to warn people not to talk about the Devil. It was widely known and used by the mid 1600s. The phrase originated in England, where it was, and still is, more often given as ‘talk of the Devil’.
EXAMPLE
Frank: “I haven’t seen James for weeks."
Kate: “Look, here comes Bob right now."
Frank: “Well, talk of the devil. Hi, there. We were just talking about you. speak of the devil and in he walks."

THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS

英文諺語 THE ROAD TO HELL IS PAVED WITH GOOD INTENTIONS 手抱菩薩操屠刀

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
MEANING
The intention to engage in good acts often fails. It points up the principle that there is no merit in good intentions unless they are acted on; people often mean well but do bad things ( this can be a strong rebuke, implying that the person you are addressing did something bad and his or her good intentions do not matter).
Very few people have bad intentions. But most of the problems in the world are caused by good intentions. They may not seem good to us, but they seem good to the one taking the action. Good intentions alone are not enough to make our actions moral.
All of us justify our actions to ourselves. It is human nature to do so. Leon Felsinger’s theory of Cognitive Dissonance posits that we feel psychic distress when we do things that consciously violate our own values, so we create justifications for what we do, allowing us to comfortably live with ourselves. Even Hitler, the modern symbol of ultimate evil, had good intentions, as did his followers. Otherwise, he would not have been able to convince intelligent, educated, enlightened Europeans that the world would be a better place without Jews and other impure people like homosexuals, Gypsies, blacks and intellectually deficient people. However, his good intentions spawned the most horrific genocidal crusade in human history.
During the Middle Ages and afterwards, well-intentioned witch hunters in Europe and America burned tens of thousands of women alive at the stake in the hope of ending epidemics, and they instilled paranoia in the populace, for anyone could be suspected of being a witch or a consorter with witches.
EXAMPLE
Kate: “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt your feelings; I only wanted to help you." Frank: “Oh, yeah? The road to hell is paved with good intentions."
