YOU CANNOT HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT

YOU CAN’T HAVE YOUR CAKE AND EAT IT (TOO) 魚與熊掌不可兼得

MEANING
Once the cake is eaten, it is gone. It can be used to say that one cannot or should not have or want more than one deserves or is reasonable, or that one cannot or should not try to have two incompatible things; you can’t have two desirable but contradictory options – you have to choose.
There is a sentimental part in most people that wants to make a good experience continue for as long as possible, and then to have good memories that last forever. It’s only human nature to want to be comfortable and happy, and “having your cake” can actually come in many forms. There is a promise in having the metaphorical cake that is sometimes broken when the actual cake is eaten. There is disappointment involved in the realization of any dream. Dreams and expectations are abstract and ideal, whereas experiences are very real. As you think about a cake, it is as moist and flavorful as your imagination can make it. You can change the flavor from vanilla to chocolate and back in a heartbeat. But once you’ve mixed up the ingredients and they’ve been in the oven for 20 minutes, you’re going to have a cake that conforms to the recipe you actually made. There’s no going back short of baking a brand new cake.
EXAMPLE
“You can’t have your cake and eat it – if you want more local services, you can’t expect to pay less tax.”

YOU CANNOT BURN THE CANDLE AT BOTH ENDS

YOU CANNOT BURN THE CANDLE AT BOTH ENDS

MEANING
Candles are meant to stand up vertically. In this position they can burn at only one end. They can burn at both ends only if they are held horizontally, but they will burn at an increased rate and eventually extinguish. That’s the point of this idiom, continuing at this pace is fatiguing.
To work or do other things from early in the morning until late at night and so get very little rest; to exhaust oneself, especially by being up late and getting up early to work, therefore working extremely or excessively hard for good health or peace of mind.
If you are working or studying too hard, it would be said you are burning the candle at both ends. The inference is that you won’t be able to keep this up for too long. You will soon find yourself burnt out and over tired, so rest and play are some of the answers to working too hard.

WORDS CUT MORE THAN SWORDS

WORDS CUT MORE THAN SWORDS
MEANING
A sharp tongue wounds.
Words are powerful because when spoken out loud they carry energy, sound and frequency, which are some of the building blocks of matter. Furthermore, they carry information that can be used as knowledge to create or destroy things. When you acquire the right knowledge and experience it into wisdom, it becomes very powerful and can be used to expand power.
The written word is more to be feared than the physical force. ‘Tyranny has not enemy as formidable as the pen,’ wrote William Cobbett. As a commentary on the 20th century it can be suggested that although the pen is mightier than the sword, even mightier than the pen is television and the Internet.
“Words cut deeper than knives. A knife can be pulled out, words are embedded into our souls.”
William Chapman
