OPPORTUNITY SELDOM KNOCKS TWICE

You must be ready to grab an opportunity when it comes your way.
Take any opportunity or chance when it comes – it may not come again. Opportunity seldom knocks twice – opportunity may not knock a second time, so when an opportunity to do a thing on which you have set your heart does suddenly arise you should take full advantage of it, for you may never get another chance.

CREATIVE WRITING

CREATIVE WRITING PERSONAL STATEMENT EXAMPLE

Studying history and English literature with sociology has taught me easily transferable skills, giving me the chance to experience university style learning through independent studying and reading for coursework. Having said that, they also allow me to view society through a more creative light. They widened my passion for literature as well as creative writing; and instead of viewing them from the academically structured lessons taught in school, it’s given me the chance to experiment and create my own worlds, my own fantasies and strengthen my imagination. I especially like to explore poetry and prose, with writers such as Carol Anne Duffy and Markus Zusack influencing me greatly.
Currently, I am involved in a lot of charity work, specifically for Interpal, with whom I have participated in various voluntary activities including bucket collections and participating in live charity appeals. I’ve also gained work experience in an Asylum and Immigration Tribunal, shadowing a court clerk as well as sorting out various file work and attending courtrooms. This was an enlightening experience, as I gained an insight into seeing how the system is run for granting visitors visas and passports, as well as looking in on bail hearings and disability hearings- access which is not readily granted to many people.
Working with Interpal has made me realise that I work well under pressure, and that I can be
articulate when the need arises. In regard to working in the tribunal, I recognised the importance of timekeeping as well as working to deadlines. The most important skill I think that I took away from the experience was the need to remain professional at all times, as being under somewhat harrowing situations has made me comprehend the need for a professional
veneer when called for.
Some people regard sociology as an unemployable degree, yet with the economic situation of the country, I believe it is more important than ever, opening up various pathways in the field of sociological research, an area of work I would like to make a significant contribution to after I have graduated. In regard to creative writing, many people would see it as a waste of time, not helping or developing the economy of Britain, looking instead to the engineers, bankers and scientists to help us out of our hardship.
Yet without the great stories, poetry or films, how are we as a society able to inspire ourselves to look beyond what we face? I think we have become disenchanted, to regress into the rational, technological era we live in, unable to appreciate the beauty and mysticism of life. Hopefully, with the skills I have developed and aim to acquire in university I can change that and make a noteworthy impact the creative writing world.

ONCE BITTEN, TWICE SHY

When something or someone has hurt you once, you tend to avoid that thing or person; it means when you have had an unpleasantexperience you are much more careful to avoid similar experiences in the future.
EXAMPLES
“I once sent in money for something I saw advertised in the back of a magazine, but the merchandise was of such poor quality I was sorry I’d bought it. I’ll never buy anything that way again; once bitten, twice shy."
If you fall in love with someone and that someone rejects or hurts you – once bitten – you may be very, very reluctant – twice shy – to let yourself fall in love again.

OLD HABITS DIE HARD

People find it difficult to change their accustomed behavior; some conditions (addictions, for example) may appear to be “cured", but are only waiting to resurface. “Old habits die hard" means that you must invest considerable effort in completely annihilating heavily entrenched ‘habits’. Although you may think you’ve “killed" a habit, in times of stress, you may find it rising like a phoenix from the ashes.
The phrase ‘old habits die hard’ is often used to excuse some behaviour that people wish they could stop. Though is there any truth behind this common phrase? I will discuss whether it is possible to break our old habits or whether they do indeed die hard.
When talking about habits, or habitual behaviour, I am referring to behaviours that are insensitive to reinforcer devaluation. By this I mean that an action, such as pressing a lever to gain a reward, continues even if the reward is no longer present or of value.
Many of our actions in typical daily life consist of habits such as washing our hands after going to the toilet. A lot of these behaviours are ‘neutral’ though they can be positive or negative actions. The phrase ‘old habits die hard’ is often used in conjunction with negative behaviours that can be detrimental to the individual or just no longer necessary. For example, smoking or biting their nails and laying the table for someone who has recently moved out, respectively.
EXAMPLE
“Kate retired last year, but she still gets up as early as she used to when she had to go to work. Old habits die hard."

SOCIOLOGY AND LAW

SOCIOLOGY AND LAW PERSONAL STATEMENT EXAMPLE

I have chosen to study a Combined Honours Degree in Sociology and Law as I feel that they are two very compatible combinations, which complement each other well. I believe that taking this degree is appropriate for me as it will help broaden my career options and also provide me with flexibility and variety. These subjects are rooted in the fascination I have for sociology and law. Sociology for me uses engaging ideas connected with my interest in Society, Race, Gender and Class, in order to make sense of the world around us and our place in it; it attempts to be objective and critical. I am especially keen on the modules on policy intervention, Social Policy in a Post-Colonial context and Delivering Social Welfare in the 21st Century. Law would give me the insight into the criminal justice process which I desire. I’ve taken a keen interest in the study of the welfare state and the post war consensus. I find it interesting on how welfare was brought about, its original purpose and the different perspectives on the welfare state. I am deeply impressed with the degree programme at the University of East London, especially with the personal development route which focuses on the individual’s strengths in each module. This also offers a more practical way of learning as I feel I would be more competent with this learning style. I enjoy problem solving so this would seem to be the right route of education. I am also excited about the idea of doing a work placement whilst on this course as I believe it will give me a genuine insight into organisations and institutions. Studying sociology and law will provide me with a deeper understanding into complex issues also with a view to developing my ideas using my own initiative. After completing my studies I plan to go into a role where I can use my academic knowledge to help others, eg working with Social services and dealing with young offenders.
At present I am studying fulltime, also taking advantage of the Learning Resource Centre and the Student Support Services, to enable me to gain the best possible credits in my subjects. In preparation for university life I have attended open evenings at various universities where I have spoken to current students and course tutors. I have also researched about finance and student resources, and feel that I am developing the knowledge and skills that will help me at university. Prior to starting my course in Access to Social Sciences, I spent nine years working in the NHS and private Practice (2000-2009) as a qualified special care Dental Nurse and 8 months in dental administration. In this time I’ve worked with people from all different walks of life. During this period I gained valuable knowledge and skills in delivering exceptional customer services to the general public and professionals. I have an Ability to communicate effectively face to face and over the phone at all levels. I have learnt the importance of relating well to others to build strong working relationship. Working under pressure developed through working as a Special Care Receptionist of a fast paced NHS Hospital environment. Taking accurate notes on complaints and passing on information within a given time span. I worked effectively within a team environment where I took responsibility for my assigned tasks, assisted team colleagues and liaised with other departments and external services. I participated in department meetings and gave my views on relevant topics. I demonstrated the ability to prioritise my work load and was also able to adapt well to different working environments, which enabled me to take on a supervisory role, in the absence of the Practice Manager. I instructed and organised staff, and also managed the day to day running of the clinics. As a mature student I understand the commitment I will have to put in, in attending and completing my degree.

NOTHING VENTURED, NOTHING GAINED

If you do not take risks, you will never accomplish anything. It means if you never take risks or try anything, you will never gain the rewards of that risk. In other words, say if you wanna ask someone out, if you sit back and never go for it, you may miss a great relationship. Or, you wanna invest in the stock market, but never go for it. If the stock you were gonna invest in, gains, you will never reap those monetary benefits, because you didn’t go for it.
One must take risks to achieve something, as in ‘They quit their jobs, packed up, and moved to Wisconsin, saying “nothing ventured, nothing gained.”’
EXAMPLE
Steve: Are you going to go to Law school?
Frank: No, I don’t think so. It’s too expensive and I think it’s too difficult.
Steve: Nothing ventured, nothing gained. You won’t become rich if you keep working at your current job.

SOCIOLOGY PERSONAL STATEMENT EXAMPLE

I have always been interested in what makes society work and how the actions of individuals affect society as a whole. So when I was given the opportunity to study sociology at A level I jumped at it. I find it intriguing to hear what sociologists have to say about society and how they propose to tackle social problems. The recent change in government and the subsequent changes in policy, have highlighted the importance of social policy and have shown me how sociology can be used to make a change in our society. Sociology is an important subject to study as it is something that affects all aspects of our lives. I have always questioned the norm and am attracted to the subject by its ability to provide numerous explanations for society. I am forever seeing things in everyday life and connecting it to the sociological theories that I have learnt. I believe that it is important to understand social policy and during the recent election found that matters of social policy played a large part in who I decided to vote for. I am aware that the country is currently facing a number of social problems such as high levels of unemployment, lack of housing and cuts in public spending and am interested in how to tackle them. My A level subjects have given me transferrable skills such as essay writing, thinking critically and being analytical, which will aid me in my studies at degree level. In Sociology, I particularly enjoyed studying modules on class, education, and crime and deviance. I have felt somewhat sympathetic to the Marxist perspective. Living in London, my eyes have always been open to economic oppression and the false consciousness that many of us live in. Sometimes it is easy to feel as though there is an invisible force, making life harder for the poor, whilst helping the rich. The Functionalist view that everything, in society, serves a purpose does seem to make sense, however I find it particularly disturbing as I find it hard to believe one can see crimes such a rape and genocide as having a function. I also found globalisation interesting, especially as it is a change that I have been able to observe first hand. I would like to learn more about globalisation, current and proposed social policies and gain a deeper insight into the perspectives. I would also like to learn about society in modern day Britain as the country has changed dramatically over the past few years and it would be interesting to investigate whether the classical sociological theories are still relevant.
Outside of my studies, I have taken part in the Teenage Poetry slam, I was also part of the school enterprise group. As a school prefect I was able to research the changes that other students wanted and work towards getting them implemented. I believe that similarly sociologists should use their research to create change for the better. My interests outside of school involve acting as it allows me to put myself in the shoes of other people. I regularly volunteer at my local youth club and have worked as a carer to disabled children. I believe that it is important to help others. I hope to continue to pursue my extra curricular activities at university through societies and to discover new interests. I intend use my gap year to improve my A level grades, save some money for university and gain some relevant work experience. I have recently started some part time work as a mystery shopper. I believe that this will give me some experience in research methods as I will be covertly collecting data in a sociological manner. I enjoy reading both fiction and non fiction and have acquired a small library of sociology and social policy books. I am currently reading Liquid Love by Zygmunt Bauman and intend to read some more in my gap year. I am a hardworking, reliable and enthusiastic student and believe that my sixth form has prepared me for university. I enjoy learning about society and look forward to a challenging and thought provoking degree.

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS

NO NEWS IS GOOD NEWS

Not hearing any news signifies that nothing is wrong; having no information means that bad developments are unlikely. The proverb is from the old days, over a 100 years ago. Back then when illness and death was so frequent, and communication was by letter or telegram, when news came it was too frequently that someone was ill or died. National or international news that someone would take the trouble to communicate also tended to be the bad, more spectacular news.
EXAMPLE
Bob: “I wonder if Jill is doing all right in her new job?"
Sarah: “No news is good news."
ORIGIN
The first recorded use of this exact expression in English is by James Howell in 1640, who wrote, “I am of the Italians’ mind that said, ‘Nulla nuova, buona nuova’ (no news, good news). Some years before that, James 1 of England (VI of Scotland) wrote, “No News is better than evil news".
