IT IS EASY TO BE WISE AFTER THE EVENT

IT IS EASY TO BE WISE AFTER THE EVENT

MEANING
something that you say which means that it is easy to understand what you could have done to prevent something bad from happening after it has happened. The same meaning as “it’s easy to be smart after the fact."
When something has ended badly, it is easy to say what should have been done to ensure success. Foresight is being wise before the event; being wise after the event is called “hindsight."
EXAMPLE
People often tell me they’d never have taken out a loan if they’d thought about it more carefully – but it’s easy to be smart after the fact.

IN WINE THERE IS TRUTH

IN WINE THERE IS TRUTH (THERE IS TRUTH IN WINE)

In vino veritas” is an ancient Latin phrase meaning “in wine there is truth.” The saying arises from the belief that alcohol releases inhibitions and that a person tells the truth when drunk. A frequent addition is “In vino veritas, in aqua sanitas” (“in wine there is truth, in water there is health").
There is an old Latin phrase that suggests people are more likely to say what they’re really thinking when they’re under the influence of alcohol: “In Vino Veritas," or “In Wine There is Truth."
Clearly, alcohol does cause us to lose our inhibitions, either in a pleasant, getting to know your neighbor better kind of way, or in an unpleasant, dancing on the bar kind of way. Mel Gibson would certainly fall into the latter category, and it’s the anti-Semitic comments he made while inebriated that have prompted many to wonder: Does alcohol really act as a truth serum?

IS ALCOHOL THE ULTIMATE LIE DETECTOR?

The general consensus from experts is that while alcohol may loosen a person’s lips to the point where they’ll say something they regret, it cannot conjure up thoughts that weren’t already there, somewhere.
“We don’t think thoroughly about what we are saying when we are intoxicated," said Dr. Alberto Goldwaser, a forensic psychiatrist and professor of psychiatry at NYU medical school. “But that doesn’t mean we don’t believe what we are saying. At that moment, we really believe it."
And our convictions carry through, even after the drinks’ effects wear off.
“We still mean it the next day," Goldwaser says. “The next day, we say, ‘I never meant to say it.’ Not, ‘I never meant it.’ "

PHYSIOLOGY AUTOBIOGRAPHY EXAMPLE

The human body is arguably the most complex life form that has ever existed. Studying how the body works helps us to comprehend the many processes that maintain health and find better treatment for diseases. We can make a difference to future populations by improving our knowledge of health and disease. Neurophysiology is particularly interesting; with the brain shaping our thoughts, hopes and imagination, it represents a challenging area in biology. Its intricate nature controls the processes that keep us alive. The abrupt loss of intellectual skills suffered recently by a close relative, due to the neurodegenerative illness Multi-Infarct Dementia, has encouraged me to learn about the physiological changes associated with such disorders.
My A levels complement my choice of degree. Biology enables me to appreciate the integration of the body, learning at both a molecular level and about the specific roles of organs. The substantial effect small differences in blood vessels’ structure have upon the body is extraordinary, and I look forward to learning about the circulatory system. The treatment of disease relies on the application of knowledge in this area; learning about the causes and symptoms of respiratory diseases like tuberculosis and emphysema has heightened my desire to discover more. Engaging in a genetics workshop at the University of Exeter was an invaluable introduction to degree-level laboratory techniques including DNA extraction and amplification, confirming my aspiration to study a biological science. Similarly, I benefited from learning about diagnostic equipment including X-ray generators, CT and Ultrasound scanners at Dorset County Hospital.
In Psychology, theories and research studies allow me to study the brain and nervous system in relation to behaviour. Learning about the psychological impact on the body in areas such as the stress response and biological rhythms offers a different perspective on biological topics. The influence of the brain on both our psychological and physiological health has become evident, for example, the immune system can be manipulated by hormonal imbalances instigated by the brain. At the University of Bristol I talked to experimental Psychology researchers who demonstrated the use of electroencephalography and showed us their research into facial processing and children’s understanding of eyes.
I have shown the ability to manipulate precise and intricate ideas and construct logical arguments in Mathematics. The challenges posed require flexibility and a confident approach. Persevering with a problem and using logic to obtain a correct answer is rewarding. I have learnt about many statistical techniques that are proving useful in my other subjects including Chi-squared and hypothesis testing. Participating in an Enrichment Programme at the University of Bristol involved learning about the application of Maths in weather-forecasting and whether true randomness exists.
Working at Clarks has given me an insight into the use of motivational techniques and training has taught me about taking responsibility, working independently and communicating effectively. I delivered Phonological Awareness Training at a junior school requiring commitment. My Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award demanded a range of practical and fundamental life skills which were developed further by trampolining and horse riding. The tenacity and physical demands required in these disciplines gives me satisfaction while the unpredictable nature of the horse has shown me that there is always more to learn. Working towards Grade 8 clarinet and learning the saxophone has led me to play in the Dorset Youth Wind Orchestra, performing in memorable concerts at the Royal Albert Hall.
My visit to Dorset County Hospital and enthusiasm for the broad scientific interest of the human body drives my desire to make a difference to people’s lives and pursue a career in a medical science-related profession.

HOW TO WRITE A PROPOSAL?

1. What do we need to better understand your topic?
2. What do we know little about in terms of your topic?
3. What do you propose to study?
4. What are the setting and the people that you will study?
5. What methods do you plan to use to provide data?
6. How will you analyze the data?
7. How will you validate your findings?
8. What ethical issues will you study present?
9. What do preliminary results show about the practicability and the value of the proposed study?

Ingredients of a Winning Thesis Proposal

1. Introduction (1-2 pages)

  • If you are required to write an introduction, write it so it captures the reader’s interest in this overview. It does not have to be perfect.
  • You can write this section last. Your best overview of you project most likely will come after you have written the other sections of your proposal.

2. Problem Statement

  • First formulate a research question. Next restate the question in the form of a statement: note the adverse consequences of the problem.
  • The type of study determines the kinds of question you should formulate, such as Is there something wrong in society, theoretically unclear or in dispute, or historically worth studying? Is there a program, drug, project, or product that needs evaluation? What do you intend to create or produce and how will it be of value to you and society?

3. Background

  • Capture the reader’s interest and convince him/her of the significance of the problem.
  • Give at least three reasons why the problem you have chosen is important to you and society, and specify at least two concrete examples of the problem.

4. Purpose

  • Begin with “The purpose of this study is to…” change, interpret, understand, evaluate, or analyze the problem.
  • State your thesis goal completely. Remember, it should be some form of investigative activity.

5. Significance

  • Focus on the benefits of your study not the research problem.
  • Place yourself in the position of responding to someone who says “so what?” Provide a persuasive rationale for your argument by answering the following questions: Why is your study important? To whom is it importantWhat can happen to society, or theory, or a program if the study is done or not done?

6. Methodology

  • Describe in technical language your research perspective and your past, present, or possible future points of view.
  • List three research methodologies you could use, and describe why each might be appropriate and feasible. Select the most viable method.

7. Literature Review

  • Locate and briefly describe those studies and theories that support and oppose your approach to the problem. In other words, place the proposed study in context through a critical analysis of selected research reports.
  • Be sure to include alternative methodological approaches that have been used by others who studied your problem.

8. Hypotheses

  • State clearly and succinctly what you expect the results of your study to show.
  • Focus more on the substantive nature of what you expect to find and less on how you will test for those expectations.

9. Definition of Terms

  • Describe for the reader the exact meaning of all terms used in the problem, purpose and methodology sections. Include any terms that, if not defined, might confuse the reader.
  • State the clearest definition of each term using synonyms, analogies, descriptions, examples etc. Define any theoretical terms as they are defined by proponents of the theory you are using.

10. Assumptions

  • Describe untested and un-testable positions, basic values, world views, or beliefs that are assumed in your study.
  • Your examination should extend to your methodological assumptions, such as the attitude you have toward different analytic approaches and data-gathering methods. Make the reader aware of your own biases.

11. Scope & Limitations

  • Disclose any conceptual and methodological limitations
  • Use the following questions to identify the limitations of your study: What kind of design, sampling, measurement, and analysis would be used “in the best of all possible worlds”? How far from these ideals is your study likely to be?

12. Procedure

  • Describe in detail all the steps you will carry out to choose subjects, construct variables, develop hypotheses, gather and present data, such that another researcher could replicate your work.
  • Remember the presentation of data never speaks for itself, it must be interpreted.

13. Long-Range Consequences

  • Think ahead approximately three years after the completion of your thesis project. What are the long-term consequences of your having done the study or not done the study?
  • If you carry out the study successfully your results will: confirm your hypothesis; contradict your hypothesis; or possibly be inconclusive.

PHYSICS AUTOBIOGRAPHY EXAMPLE

Since infancy, I have been intrigued as to how anything I came into contact with worked; however, the explanations I received were always either too vague or beyond my knowledge at the time, I have came to realize that the keyword for all my questions was physics, where the most complex phenomena of the universe can be explained by fitting small pieces of the puzzle into a structured theory. My passion for mathematics is another factor in my choice of physics as a degree subject. I find complex problems in both physics and mathematics very challenging, and this enables me to embrace physics as more than simply a major or a degree, but as a personal passionate.
Due to my school’s offer of Core mathematics only in the AS and A2 level I am not able to study further pure maths in school, and therefore I’m self studying it at home. This would allow me to grasp the mathematical concepts in topics like the standard model which inspire me and motivate me to work harder; hence I approach the difficult most challenging questions with enthusiasm and an open mind.
I participated in extra activities where I did practicals like measuring radioactivity, & power generation. Additionally I have taught extra classes for weaker students, helping them to achieve higher grades, and I have being elected as a prefect at school.
In summer 2008 I managed to seize the opportunity of shadowing a radiologist in the radiology department at the International Medical Centre, I was also given the opportunity to observe the planning and modelling stages of a new building where I attended the construction site. Watching the application of the laws of physics being carried out before my eyes was fantastic and an extra motivator for me.
Beyond scholastic matters, I’m interested in activities that require thinking, such as computer programming, website designing, and scientific researching. I also enjoy reading, solving complicated questions, helping people, and “tamseer", the art of wearing an Omani turban plus playing table tennis and swimming.
I am preparing myself to do my AS exams in the January session 2009 and the A2 exams in the May/June session. I am very optimistic to achieve the high grades expected for me by my teachers.I also managed to represent the Sultanate in an international youth convention at the Seychelles. I was the head delegate. Moreover I have handled the Coordination of many charity gatherings. I am as well the MISMUN coordinator and Head delegate of the 2009 MUN delegation team.
In 2006, I was awarded the “International Student Award for the Middle East region" by the Council of International Schools, and during my scholastic years, I have been awarded the Certificate of Academic Superiority, Certificate of Merit with distinction and Principal’s Honour Roll with High Distinction almost every year.
I intend to continue with my post-graduation studies for the future, in the fields of either Nuclear or quantum physics, and then continue to get a PhD. Thus I will be able to benefit other students at universities by being a lecturer to earn a living, in addition to conducting my own research in my field of physics in the same university or research centre to achieve my ultimate goal of doing something major in the world.

IF YOU RUN AFTER TWO HARES, YOU WILL CATCH NEITHER

IF YOU RUN AFTER TWO HARES, YOU WILL CATCH NEITHER

You cannot do two things successfully at the same time; concentrate on one thing at a time or you will achieve nothing. Trying to do two or more things at a time, when even one on its own needs full effort, means that none of them will be accomplished properly.
EXAMPLE
Kate: If I want to pursue my acting career, I’ll have to take more days off to go to auditions. But I want to get ahead in the office, too.
Bob: If you run after two hares, you will catch neither.
Origin:
The saying is attributed to Publilius Syrus in the form of Latin proverb “Duos insequens lepores, neulrum cap it".
同時: at the same time; simultaneously
追: chase after; run after; pursue
兩: two
兔: hare; rabbit
落空: come to nothing; fail

Related Proverbs:
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.
Don’t bite off more than you can chew.
Grasp all, lose all.
Jack of all trades and master of none.
