WHILE THERE’S LIFE, THERE’S HOPE 英文諺語

WHILE THERE’S LIFE, THERE’S HOPE 留得青山在,不怕沒柴燒

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
MEANING
Never give up; as long as you are alive, you should be hopeful, because it is possible that your situation will improve. “There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something tomorrow” (Marden) Hope, is a word used too commonly but not defined very clearly. When people hope on something, they are simply wishing for it to happen.
EXAMPLE
Sarah: “What will we do, now that our house and everything we own has burned up?”
Fred: “While there’s life there’s hope.”

WHERE THERE’S A WILL THERE’S A WAY

英文諺語 WHERE THERE’S A WILL THERE’S A WAY 有志者事竟成

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
MEANING
This is a famous saying. It means that you can accomplish anything if you work hard; in this case, “will” means a strong motivation to accomplish something. So you can understand the phrase to mean “If you have a strong motivation to accomplish something, there’s a way to accomplish it.” This will be the case even if it is challenging, difficult, or seemingly impossible.
Will-power is the greatest driving force in man. It helps him get through all the difficulties in life. Will-power is the most essential ingredient of success. It enables a person to find a way to overcome the obstacle in his path. He continues his journey towards his chosen goal. A man who loses heart at the sight of failure can never achieve his goal. But a man who is determined to attain his objectives is not disheartened by failures. One should not lose heart during adversities.
The real essence of life lies in struggle. Determination and calmness help a person in his Endeavor. They provide him inspiration to achieve success. A wise man accepts the challenges of life with a calm mind. Our ancient scriptures also advocate that one should do one’ duty with determination. One should have a firm determination to strive and win.
Why this proverb is so popular? This idiom is probably so memorable because of its two ‘w’ sounds. Alliteration is often used in proverbs to help them to stick in the mind.
EXAMPLE
Paul: “I have no doubt that Jessie will find a publisher for her novel. Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”

WELL BEGUN IS HALF DONE 英文諺語

WELL BEGUN IS HALF DONE 好的開始是成功的一半

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
MEANING
beginning a project well ensures that the project will require not much more effort to finish it, as well as greatly increasing the chances of success.  Beginning a project well makes it easier to do the rest.; Once you have begun a project well, you do not need to put in much more effort to finish it.
Said as a warning that you think your conversation is being overheard,  as it emphasizes that someone may be listening.
ESSAY
It often happens that something which at first seems very difficult is soon finished when we have once managed to make a good beginning. For instance, in learning to swim we may try hard, day after day, for a long time, without seeming to make the least progress. All of a sudden some day we find to our delight that we can make one or two strokes, and henceforward progress is rapid and easy. In this case the great difficulty is to gain confidence in the buoyancy of the water, and, when that is once acquired, nothing else is needed but regular practice.
A similar difficulty of gaining self-confidence renders it hard to make the first beginning in many other physical accomplishments. When a child in its first efforts to walk has learnt to keep its balance for one or two steps, it has thereby got over the great impediment in the way of further progress. In learning to skate and ride a bicycle the great difficulty is, to learn by our own experience that it is really possible to keep our balance, when supported on what seems to be a very precarious foundation.
In acquiring new branches of knowledge it is also generally true that well begun is half done; but not quite for the same reason. In learning a new language, it is very irksome to master the rudiments that have to be learnt first, such as the alphabet, the pronunciation, and the elements of the grammar. After these are thoroughly learnt, the most unpleasant part of the task is finished, and a good foundation is laid for the acquisition of the language.
Only it must be noticed that the proverb says “Well begun is half done.” A bad commencement actually impedes the progress of composition, as it has either to be written all over again, or must be amended by many alterations, the making of which entails a large expenditure of time and trouble.
EXAMPLE
Simon: “I’m afraid I’ll never be able to finish writing this report.”
Fred: “You’ve already written a good introduction. Well begun is half done.”

WALLS HAVE EARS

英文諺語 WALLS HAVE EARS 壁上有耳

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
MEANING
Said as a warning that you think your conversation is being overheard,  as it emphasizes that someone may be listening.
This phrase was used on many propaganda posters during World War II. It was basically a reminder to civilians involved in the war effort to be wary about what they spoke about, or to whom, for fear of information getting into the hands of enemy spies.
The conversation is easily overheard, someone is listening, as in Be careful what you say; the walls have ears. This saying may come from a story about Dionysius of Syracuse (430–367 b.c.), who had an ear-shaped cave cut and connected between the rooms of his palace so that he could hear what was being said from another room. Similar listening posts were installed in other palaces over the centuries, including the Louvre in Paris. In English the phrase was first recorded in its present form in 1620.
EXAMPLE
“I Don’t say anything about our company sales plan here. Walls have ears."

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE 英文諺語

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE 變化是生活的調味料

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
MEANING
Said to emphasize that doing many different things, or often changing what you do, makes life interesting; you should try many different kinds of experiences, because trying different things keeps life interesting.
The proverb tells that variety of things and ideas in the life of man brings him fun and joy as the spices of life like joy and fun make him enthusiastic and enjoyable like different flavors of spices add to the taste of food and make the food palatable. Each spice is different in flavors and they add to the taste of food. To increase the taste of food and for better intake of food, we add spices of different flavors while preparing the food we want. The tasteless or less tasted food is neglected to be taken in. Different flavors are needed for the different dishes. Otherwise the same flavor looses its taste after sometime because the variety of spices makes the food eatable.
Similarly variety is needed in every sphere of life. The same routine life of the family like going to job coming back home and doing household work makes life monotonous and we lose our creativity in life. There should be some changes in the lifestyle of people. When we engage in the monotonous work continuously for several hours and days, we feel very tired. We should have some break to carry on the life afresh. Engaging ourselves in other than our routine work entertains the mind and provides opportunities to refresh us. Change always brings happiness and happiness always makes the people lively. We may go to the hill stations and other worth seeing places of our interest which we can afford. Such changes in life make the life charming and happy and the variety fills our hearts with joy and pleasure.
EXAMPLE
“I usually spend my summer vacation camping, but I think I should try something different this year. Variety is the spice of life.

VIRTUE IS ITS OWN REWARD

英文諺語 VIRTUE IS ITS OWN REWARD 為善自得其樂

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
MEANING
You should not be virtuous in hopes of getting a reward, but because it makes you feel good to be virtuous.
The essential quality of a virtuous person is that he does not expect any reward for his good deeds. The reward that he gets is the satisfaction of having done a good thing. Anyone who expects a reward for his virtuous deed is not essentially virtuous. A person who resorts to foul methods to attain something may not succeed. But a virtuous person’s good deeds will lead him to success.
Life is a mixture of good and evil. Virtue means goodness. A virtuous person is essentially good. His mind is free from selfishness and he does not harm others. Instead, he helps people through his good words and deeds. He is a man of principles.
EXAMPLE
Paul: “If I help you, will you pay me?"
Harry: “Virtue is its own reward."

TOO MANY COOKS SPOIL THE BROTH

英文諺語 TOO MANY COOKS SPOIL THE BROTH 七手八腳必敗事;人多礙事

米德佳提供中文到英文翻譯服務,含英文編修
MEANING
Too many persons involved in managing an activity can ruin it, as in Without a conductor, every player had an idea for how the music should go—too many cooks spoil the broth. This expression alludes to each of many cooks adding something to a soup, which finally tastes awful. If too many people participate in a task, the task will not be done very well. You use this proverb to say that if too many people do the same thing (job, project,, etc.), it will not be done well. Sometimes people just say, “Too many cooks. " Another proverb “There is safety in numbers" expresses the opposite idea.
EXAMPLE
he director never asks more than 10 people to work with him in his projects, and he wants the best 10. He always says, “Too many cooks spoil the broth."
HISTORY
It was already considered a proverb in 1575 (by George Gascoigne in The Life of P. Care).

Something that you say that means that it is natural for people to make mistakes and it is important to forgive people when they do.
EXAMPLE
“You’d think he could find it in his heart to forgive her. To err is human and all that."
HISTORY
The popular saying created by line 525 of Pope’s poem An Essay on Criticism, Part II (1711)
In the original poem, as published in 1711, the line is given as “To err is humane; to forgive, divine.” This is not because Pope erred in his spelling or believed that making a mistake was a compassionate thing to do. At the time, humane was the common spelling used for the word human.
