It’s good advice as anyone who works with people will tell you, whether teaching or in customer service. When dealing with surly people of any kind, if you keep your own demeanor calm and your own voice calm and normal (as opposed to raising your voice) then that will usually calm the person you are dealing with. When you get frustrated and raise your voice, that will only lead to an already frustrated or angry person becoming even more so, and more difficult to deal with.
