大部分發表的期刊論文中，緊接在「摘要」之後，會按照英文字母順序，列出10個以內的「關鍵字」，代表整篇文章的主要概念，以及最精華的部分。
如何正確選用關鍵字呢？首先，必須明確知道研究論文的主題與目的，才能挑選最適當的關鍵字。接著，站在讀者的角度思考，進行檢索時，可能會鍵入哪些關鍵字來搜尋相關的文獻。
既然關鍵字會作為索引及目錄功能使用，慎選關鍵字，有助於在利用網路進行線上搜尋時，讓研究論文出現於恰當的文獻搜尋結果中。因此，理想的關鍵字不但可能增加文章的曝光率，也會讓「對的人看到對的文章」。
除此之外，在投稿期刊或研討會時，選擇正確的關鍵字，也有助於編輯人員替您安排合適的審稿者。
Abstracts often end up in electronic databases, so it is important that they contain the keywords that will enable other researchers to find your work. You can look in a standard database in your area to find keywords that relate to your topic.
Length is very important. 200 words will be adequate provided you write concisely and are summarising, not re-writing, the contents of your report. Electronic databases automatically truncate abstracts beyond a certain length so keywords associated with your results, conclusions or recommendations may be omitted. (e.g. MEDLINE truncates everything beyond 400 words.)
