驕者必敗:驕傲的人往往會因大意而遭到挫敗。如:他宣稱自己穩拿冠軍,卻名落孫山,的確驗證了驕者必敗這句話。
If you are too proud and overconfident, you will make mistakes leading to your defeat. Overconfidence leads to mistakes.
I believe the way this proverb has evolved is that the “pride" actually means “stubbornness".
As a result, when one is too “proud" to admit they are wrong, they become stubborn, refusing to change strategy or direction, instead, sticking with their errant conviction.
Once that kind of pride sets in, the next step is the “fall", which is the resultant bad outcome from bad input that was not continually, objectively evaluated and then altered as necessary.
EXAMPLE
Frank: “I’m the best student in my history class. I’m sure I can pass the exam without studying very hard."
Jane: “Be careful. Pride goes before a fall, you know."
